Wolf Man (2025) is an atmospheric but uneven werewolf reboot: its body-horror transformation and creature effects drew praise, while critics faulted its thin script, slow pace, and dark cinematography. The result is a notable step down from Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man—though viewers looking for a somber, effects-driven monster story may still find it worth a watch.
What is Wolf Man about?
Universal and Blumhouse’s Wolf Man reimagines the classic Universal monster for a contemporary family-horror story. Directed and co-written by Leigh Whannell, whose earlier horror feature was The Invisible Man (2020), the film follows a family man trying to protect his wife and daughter from a werewolf. He is infected and begins a gradual transformation into the creature.
Christopher Abbott stars as the father, with Julia Garner as his wife and Sam Jaeger also in the cast. Jason Blum produced. The film opened theatrically on 17 January 2025 and runs 103 minutes.
What works—and what does not?
Atmosphere and transformation
Some critics praised the film’s atmosphere, visual effects, and body-horror approach to the transformation. Screen Connections described it as an intriguing, original take on the classic monster, while coverage at Why So Blu? praised Whannell’s command of atmosphere and aesthetic even as it found the slow burn wanting. Those strengths give the reboot a distinct identity: it leans into physical change and dread rather than simply reproducing a gothic version of the familiar werewolf story.
#1 Best Overall
Pacing, script, and presentation
The reservations are substantial. High-Def Digest criticized the thin script, sluggish pacing, dark cinematography, creature design, and performances. Other criticism found that the film’s psychological and body-horror ambitions did not fully land. Taken together, the split is less about whether Whannell has a clear visual approach than whether the story sustains it for a feature-length runtime.
The opening-day CinemaScore was C, a sign that audience response was not uniformly enthusiastic. Screen Rant also noted that the audience score broke Whannell’s prior streak; neither measure explains individual viewers’ reactions, but both fit the picture of a release that divided rather than broadly satisfied its audience.
How was Wolf Man received?
Rotten Tomatoes scores shifted as reviews accumulated. MovieWeb reported a 55% Tomatometer and 65% Popcornmeter at release in 2025. Later 2025 coverage by Collider reported 48% for critics and 55% for audiences; home-media coverage recorded another snapshot of 50% and 56%. These are dated snapshots, not fixed measures, and the small differences reflect changing totals over time.
The contrast with Whannell’s The Invisible Man is sharper: CinemaBlend reported that film at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes in 2025. By that measure, Wolf Man was a clear drop in critical standing. The comparison is useful for expectations, not a guarantee that viewers who liked one will dislike the other: the films share a director, but this reboot’s slower, more divisive approach did not achieve the same critical consensus.

Wolf Man opened with about $10.6 million domestically and placed third, behind Mufasa: The Lion King and One of Them Days, according to January 2025 box-office coverage from Collider and mxdwn. The film’s reported worldwide total varies by outlet: Wikipedia’s 2025 compilation gives about $36.8 million, while another outlet cited roughly $34.8 million. A careful summary is approximately $35–37 million worldwide against a reported $25 million production budget.
That gross is not the same as profit. Launch coverage estimated a break-even point near $60 million after marketing costs and exhibitors’ share were considered. The theatrical run therefore fell short of that estimate. A C CinemaScore and mixed reviews may help explain the lack of broad momentum, but the available figures do not establish a single cause for the result.
Rank #4
The movie later found a streaming audience: Collider reported in August 2025 that it reached Prime Video’s top 10. The article connected the surge in interest in part to Garner’s rising profile after Weapons. That is evidence of a streaming rebound at that time, not confirmation of where the film is available today.

It is a reasonable pick if you want a modern monster film built around transformation, atmosphere, and effects, and you are comfortable with a slow, uneven story. If you want the sustained tension and critical reception associated with The Invisible Man, temper expectations: Wolf Man was received less favorably, and its central craft strengths did not persuade every reviewer.

There is no need to treat the Rotten Tomatoes percentage as a personal verdict. The critical split points to a practical choice: prioritize the body-horror premise and Whannell’s visual approach, and the film may work for you; prioritize brisk pacing, a tightly developed script, or a widely embraced take on the classic monster, and it may disappoint.
Where can you watch or own it?
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released Wolf Man on 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on 18 March 2025. The UK release followed on 21 April 2025. The 4K UHD edition includes HDR10 and Dolby Atmos; the standard edition and Steelbook were offered with a Blu-ray and digital code. Availability and included digital entitlements can vary by retailer and territory.
Home-video reviews were more positive about the disc presentation than the film itself. High-Def Digest graded the film C, video A-, audio A, and extras B+, praising the HDR10 transfer and Atmos mix. Reviewers also noted more than 30 minutes of extras and a Leigh Whannell commentary on disc. Those are disc-review assessments, not a guarantee of playback quality on every display or sound system.
Streaming availability changes by country and date. The documented Prime Video top-10 appearance was in August 2025; it does not establish that the film is currently included with a subscription or available to rent in every region.
