Marvel’s account of the feud centers on that killing, retold in Wolverine (1988) #10, while later stories renew the violence through repeated attacks and battles.
Why do Wolverine and Sabretooth hate each other?
The defining personal wound is Silver Fox’s death. In Marvel’s telling, Sabretooth killed Logan’s partner in the early 20th century, and the attack became the iconic ignition point for a feud Marvel describes as lasting more than a century. The story is told in Wolverine (1988) #10, written by Chris Claremont and drawn by John Buscema. Marvel’s issue listing identifies the comic; Marvel’s retrospective describes the birthday attack and the brutal fight that followed.
Marvel frames the birthday attack as a grim recurring tradition: Creed uses the anniversary to intimidate and hurt Logan emotionally as well as physically. The rivalry is therefore not just a contest between two hard-to-kill fighters. It is also a recurring act of cruelty tied to a specific loss.
What their shared history adds
Logan and Creed have also been connected through Team X, a covert group whose operations form part of their complicated past. Marvel’s Wolverine history guide points to Wolverine (1988) #48 as a Team X story and includes both men in its account. The shared history helps explain why their paths cross repeatedly, but it does not make their motives or conduct equivalent.

Weapon X supplies another layer. Marvel describes the program as an off-the-books organization that experimented on mutants; its Weapon X guide identifies Sabretooth among its early subjects and recounts Logan’s adamantium bonding and memory alteration. Their involvement links them to an institutional history of violence and manipulation, but the accounts do not establish that they underwent identical procedures.
How the feud keeps going
Marvel emphasizes the characters’ long lives and healing factors as reasons they can survive repeated violent encounters. That durability makes another fight possible; it does not make every appearance a fight. Marvel notes that they have sometimes shared a team, even as their mutual hatred repeatedly resurfaces.

Their characterization also matters. Marvel presents Logan as a hero with a history of restraint and community, while Creed is characterized as a cruel predator. Treating them as simply equal rivals misses the moral difference in how Marvel frames them.

What to keep in mind about continuity
Marvel’s comics have retold and expanded this history across decades. The Silver Fox story is best described as the feud’s iconic personal origin, not necessarily the first time the characters encountered one another chronologically. Their partnership or coexistence in some stories does not erase the recurring hatred that defines their rivalry. The comics above refer to Marvel Comics continuity; adaptations and alternate universes may tell events differently.
