The next day, Ferrell tells Steele he worries about her safety and says, “I feel like I let you down in that moment,” according to PEOPLE’s September 2024 account of the documentary.
What happened during the Texas steak challenge?
Will & Harper follows Ferrell and Steele on a 17-day cross-country road trip. At the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Ferrell attempts the restaurant’s 72-ounce steak challenge while dressed as Sherlock Holmes. Other diners photograph the pair, and Steele feels uncomfortable with the attention.

The challenge itself is not the emotional turning point. PEOPLE’s account says Steele later became the target of hostile social-media comments connected to the outing. In their conversation the following day, Ferrell becomes tearful as he talks about what happened, his concern for Steele’s safety, and his feeling that he failed to protect her in that moment.
Who are Will Ferrell and Harper Steele?
Steele is Ferrell’s longtime friend and a former Saturday Night Live colleague. PEOPLE reported that Steele joined the show as a head writer in the same week Ferrell joined the cast in 1995. She later came out as a trans woman.

How does the scene fit into the documentary?
The Texas encounter is one part of a road trip that gives the friends room to talk about identity, friendship, and what it means to show up for one another. PEOPLE also describes earlier emotional moments after Steele receives a warm welcome at a biker bar and at a race track in Meeker, Oklahoma. Those experiences provide a contrast to the scrutiny she faces in Texas.
Steele described traveling with Ferrell as a privilege and as a way to demonstrate allyship. “If you’re a trans person, you probably don’t have the opportunity to have Will Ferrell with you crossing America,” she said, as quoted by PEOPLE. Ferrell characterized his role as asking questions and allowing Steele to do the talking. The documentary’s focus is their relationship and shared journey, not Ferrell speaking on behalf of Steele.
