Gregory Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West is the original novel behind the Broadway musical and the films. It was first published in 1995, and it is an adult book that reframes the Wicked Witch of the West, called Elphaba, and asks who gets labeled wicked and why. The stage and screen versions draw on the novel, but they are not a record of it. This guide explains what the book is about and how it differs from the adaptations, and it keeps the ending at the level of theme rather than retelling the final events.
Is this the official book of Wicked?
Yes, in the sense that the novel is the source work. The publisher, Hachette UK, describes it as Maguire’s original novel, first published in 1995. It is also the first book associated with the Wicked Years series. Maguire’s official publications list names three further titles in the same series: Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz.
Is the novel the same story as the musical or films?

“Years later, when questions arose in me about the mystery of evil and how the concept of the inhuman enemy is used to legitimize violence (institutionalized bullying!) I needed to write a novel about it.” (Gregory Maguire, official FAQ)
In a 2003 interview with Publishers Weekly, Maguire said he wanted to write an adult novel about an evil character, and he explained why he chose the Wicked Witch of the West. His reasoning was that the Witch was already understood to be wicked, which gave him a starting point for questioning that label. The novel therefore centers on Elphaba and treats the received label of “wicked” as something to examine rather than accept.

How the novel handles power, the Wizard and the label “wicked”
A Q&A published by the Denver Center for the Performing Arts describes the novel as raising questions about power, about the Wizard, and about how the Witch is regarded. It does not offer a single answer key to Oz. Readers should expect Maguire to pose these questions rather than settle them, and the book does not present one fixed interpretation of its villain.
How much of the ending this guide covers
This guide does not give a scene-by-scene account of how the novel ends. The plot details a reader would need to check event by event are not set out in the sources available here, and this page does not fill that gap from the musical, the films or memory of either. What can be stated with confidence is the thematic direction: the novel deliberately reframes who gets called wicked, and it asks how power constructs enemies.

The HarperCollins reading guide for the novel identifies the opening, the ending, the character arcs and the tragic structure as subjects for discussion. It is a useful companion for a reader who has finished the book and wants to think through those elements, and it is the best place to look for prompts about how the story’s conclusion lands.
Is it suitable for younger readers?
Treat it as an adult novel. Axios reported in 2024 that the book is not aimed at children and attributed that warning to Maguire. The family audience of the musical and films does not carry over to the book, so parents and teachers should not assume that a young reader who enjoyed the stage show will be well served by the novel.
