The clearest original-film example is the sandtrooper: StarWars.com describes the Tatooine troopers’ dirty armor, shoulder pauldrons and heavy backpacks as a specialized costume design. Pauldrons are not standard gear for every stormtrooper, and their colors do not follow one universal rank chart.
What the pauldron tells you about the costume
A pauldron is the armor piece worn over the shoulder. In the original-film costume context, it helps distinguish sandtroopers from the familiar standard stormtrooper look. StarWars.com’s retrospective, “Empire at 40 | Costumes in The Empire Strikes Back”, describes Tatooine sandtroopers’ “dirty armor, pauldrons, and heavy backpacks” as part of a look that became a hallmark of the Galactic Empire.
That is a statement about what the costume looks like on screen. It does not establish that every stormtrooper needs a pauldron, or that the item has one fixed in-universe meaning wherever it appears.
Do pauldron colors indicate rank?
In some Star Wars depictions, pauldron colors are associated with rank, position or specialization. But the meanings vary across troopers and continuities. Wookieepedia’s pauldron reference collects examples; it should not be treated as proof of a universal Imperial color code.

- Identify the specific unit and continuity before explaining a color.
- Distinguish a visible costume feature from a confirmed in-universe rank or role.
- Avoid rules such as “orange always means commander” unless a source establishes that meaning for the specific depiction.
Why the distinction matters
The sandtrooper example supports a straightforward answer: pauldrons help make some troopers visually distinct, and in particular depictions they can also signal status or specialty. The official costume discussion establishes the sandtrooper design, while broader color interpretations require more specific context.
