Natalie Scatorccio dies in the Season 2 finale, “Storytelling,” after she steps between Misty and Lisa. Misty is trying to inject Lisa with a sedative, and the syringe hits Natalie instead. In the plot mechanics the death is an accident. Director Karyn Kusama, however, frames Natalie’s final move as a deliberate protective act, one that lets her act against the shame and guilt she has carried for the whole series.

Juliette Lewis’s own account is narrower than the common shorthand that she “quit.” In a 2024 Variety interview she said she knew Natalie would be killed, and she described herself as suited to a series for two seasons because she prefers the finite structure of filmmaking. She did not say she had demanded that limit, and the sources available for this article do not establish a conflict that forced her exit.

What happens in the finale

The episode builds to a hunt for the adult survivors during a crisis at Lottie’s compound. The sequence unfolds in four steps:

  1. Lisa arrives carrying a gun.
  2. Misty rushes toward her with a syringe, intending to stop her.
  3. Natalie moves into the path between them.
  4. The injection proves fatal, and Natalie dies at the bonfire.

The episode does not end on the bonfire alone. It pairs Natalie’s death with an airplane vision in which she encounters younger versions of herself and other figures from the show’s past. Harper’s Bazaar, TheWrap, and Vanity Fair all describe the sequence and the accidental nature of the injection.

Why the show kills Natalie

Two explanations are useful here, and they work at different levels. One is about the character. The other is about the series as a whole. They should be read separately, because they answer different questions.

The character: guilt, shame, and a protective final choice

Kusama’s account ties Natalie’s last act to the emotional weight she has carried since the wilderness years. She connects that burden to Javi’s death and to Natalie’s role as a leader in the wilderness. In Harper’s Bazaar (May 26, 2023) she summed up the arc with a single line: “She’s driven by shame.”

The ending therefore gives Natalie a final choice that protects Lisa. It does not erase the larger costs of her past. The death closes her arc without resolving the guilt that drove it.

The series: consequences for central characters

Co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco has given a broader rationale. In an interview reported by ComicBook.com on February 1, 2025, he said: “If the show is about trauma and the consequences of what they went through, then there needs to be consequences.” In his view, a show built around trauma has to let the cost of that trauma fall on its central characters, and an adult death of this kind is part of that cost.

What this explanation does not establish

The reporting does not support reading Natalie’s death as a punishment for addiction. It also does not establish one settled supernatural interpretation of the airplane sequence. The evidence supports trauma, guilt, narrative consequence, and an ambiguous line between belief and instinct, and nothing more definitive than that.

Level Who states it What it explains Limit
Character Karyn Kusama, director and executive producer (Harper’s Bazaar, May 26, 2023) Natalie’s final action is protective and tied to shame and guilt over Javi’s death and her wilderness leadership Describes the character’s motive, not the production decision
Series Jonathan Lisco, co-showrunner (ComicBook.com, February 1, 2025) A show about trauma needs consequences that reach central characters Stated rationale, not a full account of how the writers planned the season
Career (Lewis) Juliette Lewis (Variety, September 4, 2024, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment) Her preference for finite film work over episodic television Describes her preference; does not describe a dispute with producers

Why Juliette Lewis left the show

In the 2024 Variety interview, Lewis said: “I think I’m good for a series for two seasons.” She explained that episodic television is a different kind of work from film, and that her instincts lean toward filmmaking, with one director and a finite beginning, middle, and end. Asked whether she had told the producers she could not do more than two seasons, she said she had not. She also said she knew Natalie would be killed.

What the evidence does not support

Lewis’s own statements do not establish that she was fired, that she quit in protest, or that she pressed the writers to kill Natalie early. Reports of a feud behind the scenes have not been substantiated by the sources available here. The accurate summary is that Lewis knew about the death and expressed a preference for bounded film work. That is a career preference, not evidence of a dispute.

How she describes the goodbye

In a 2023 TheWrap interview about filming the finale, Lewis described the goodbye as emotional and spoke warmly about her colleagues and the production. That account is hard to square with a simple conflict narrative, and it is the strongest first-hand material on how she experienced leaving.
