Mumbai cartoonist Hemant Morparia recalls asking French satirist Georges Wolinski whether provocation alone was enough—or whether satire also needed intention and substance. In a first-person retrospective published by Scroll.in on January 8, 2015, Morparia recounts their meetings, shared cartoons and a disagreement about Charlie Hebdo’s deliberately provocative approach. The exchange is Morparia’s recollection, not a verbatim interview transcript.

How Morparia says the two cartoonists met

Morparia writes that Alliance Française in Mumbai contacted him about meeting Wolinski. He says he did not initially recognize the French cartoonist’s name and looked up his work online before they met at Mumbai’s Press Club, with an interpreter present. They showed each other their cartoons.

The “marriage tourism” cartoon

Morparia recalls showing Wolinski a cartoon about “marriage tourism,” depicting young brides from Hyderabad and older Arab men. According to Morparia, Wolinski liked the cartoon, took it with him, and it eventually appeared in Charlie Hebdo. These details come from Morparia’s account; they are not independently corroborated here.

What Morparia meant by asking, “Why are you so provocative?”

Morparia characterizes Charlie Hebdo as deliberately provocative. He says he challenged Wolinski over whether provoking a reaction was sufficient in itself, or whether a cartoon also needed meaningful intention or substance. The question in the title captures the disagreement as Morparia remembers it; it should not be read as a transcript of their exact words.

In Morparia’s analysis, provocation could prompt disgust, shock, anger and threats. That is his interpretation of the magazine’s relationship with its audience, rather than an independently established account of how readers responded. His question was not simply whether satire could offend, but what the provocation was meant to achieve.

Their shared exhibition and later contact

Morparia says the two later held a joint exhibition in La Rochelle. The pairing brought together his cartoons about France, drawn during his trip there, and Wolinski’s cartoons and sketches about India. Morparia recalls that Wolinski gave the exhibition the headline “Morparia, un frere,” which he translated as “Morparia, a brother.”

After the exhibition, Morparia says they met again in Paris, stayed in contact and later visited Wolinski’s home. These are personal recollections in the same retrospective, not separately verified records of the events.

Freedom of expression and the attack that killed Wolinski

Morparia reflects that freedom of expression carries risks and describes the attack that killed Wolinski as an escalation. His article also attributes the line “I’d rather die standing up than kneeling down” to Stéphane Charbonnier, then editor of Charlie Hebdo. The reported quotation is presented here as Morparia’s attribution.

That context gives the remembered argument about provocation a sharper edge: Morparia’s question concerned not only the capacity of satire to offend, but also its purpose and the risks faced by those who make it.

What this account can—and cannot—establish

Morparia’s January 8, 2015 retrospective is a first-person source for his memories of meeting Wolinski, exchanging cartoons, exhibiting together and debating provocation. It does not independently confirm every anecdote, publication detail or remembered line of dialogue. The disagreement is best understood as Morparia’s account of a conversation, rather than a separately recorded interview.
