The commonly reported reason for the recast is that James had grown older and looked less like a young child, making him a less convincing fit for childhood flashbacks. The available sources do not include a production-team statement confirming that explanation, though Psych itself acknowledged the change with a joke.
Who played Young Shawn in Psych?
Liam James portrayed Young Shawn before Skyler Gisondo took over the role. Gisondo’s biographical reference places the change in early 2010; that is secondary context, not a verified first-airing date. The character reference lists both actors, while Gisondo’s biographical reference says he replaced James.

Why was the role recast?
The explanation commonly reported is practical: James was growing up and looked older, while the role called for a child in flashback scenes. That account appears in a secondary explanation. The sources available do not establish that a producer or casting-team member officially confirmed the reason, so it is best understood as the reported explanation rather than a documented production statement.
How did Psych address the change?
“The Polarizing Express” jokes about it
In season 5, episode 14, a dream sequence features Young Shawn saying, “Well, we changed!” He then jokes that the actor looks different from week to week. The show’s line turns the visible recast into a self-aware gag; it is character dialogue, not an explanation from the production team. The character reference identifies the episode and joke.

A later visual joke in “Yang 3 in 2D”
A separate episode reference notes that an image in “Yang 3 in 2D” was edited to include Gisondo, prompting Lassiter to joke that it looks photoshopped. It is another wink at the casting change rather than evidence about why it happened. The episode reference describes the image and joke.
