Santos Escobar left WWE after the company released him at the end of April 2026, according to Fightful. Escobar said the call came six or seven days after his second surgery, while he was doing therapy. That timing is his account—not a confirmed explanation from WWE for the release.
What happened to Santos Escobar at WWE?
The key distinction is between two separate events: Escobar’s contract expired in October 2025, but he later re-signed, according to his account; WWE released him at the end of April 2026, Fightful reported. The earlier contract expiration was not his final departure.
Why did he leave WWE in 2026?
Fightful reported that WWE released Escobar at the end of April 2026. In an interview with TMZ Inside The Ring, as transcribed by Fightful, Escobar said he received the release call while doing therapy, six or seven days after his second surgery. He described it as “a very heartbreaking situation for me, personally, because I was injured.”
That statement describes the timing and how Escobar experienced the news; it does not establish that his injury was WWE’s reason for releasing him. The available reporting does not state WWE’s public rationale.

How the 2025 contract story led to confusion
On October 6–7, 2025, Fightful reported that WWE sources expected Escobar’s contract to expire at midnight on October 7 and that he had declined offers to re-sign. In his later interview account, Escobar said the contract did expire and he was prepared to leave. He said WWE president Nick Khan called the next day, offered to make things right for his character and send him to AAA, and that this was why he re-signed. That private conversation and the offer are Escobar’s account, not independently verified details.
Injuries, farewell and new ring name
Fightful reported that Escobar suffered a triceps injury and underwent surgery in March 2026, followed by a second operation for an ulnar nerve in April. He said the release call came shortly after that second surgery.
