“Boldest era” is a critic’s interpretation, not Ariana Grande’s own declared label for this chapter. In a March 2024 Rolling Stone feature, Rob Sheffield makes the case that her return with “Yes, And?” and Eternal Sunshine could mark a new level of ambition: a dance-floor comeback that answers public scrutiny while invoking Madonna’s example. The argument is compelling as a reading of the music and timing—not proof of Grande’s intentions or what she will do next.
What “boldest era” means in the feature
Sheffield’s March 2024 feature is about a moment of return. Grande released “Yes, And?” ahead of Eternal Sunshine, after a reported four-year gap in solo releases while she filmed the Wicked movies. Sheffield treats that context as more than a routine album cycle: the new single sounds like a confident re-entry, and its response to public commentary gives the comeback a sharper edge.
The word “might” matters. Sheffield is proposing a career-scale interpretation—that this could be one of Grande’s most daring phases—not reporting a confirmed plan from the singer. The comparison to Madonna is his critical frame, not a stated ambition by Grande to join a particular “league.” Read the March 2024 Rolling Stone feature.
Why Sheffield hears Madonna in “Yes, And?”
A dance-pop sound and a specific reference
The feature connects the single’s house- and disco-inflected dance-floor sound to Madonna, with “Vogue” as a central point of comparison. The link is not simply that both artists make pop music for dancing: Sheffield hears “Yes, And?” using a recognizable lineage of self-possession and club-ready performance to make its comeback statement.

A reply to scrutiny
Sheffield also reads the song as an answer to commentary about Grande’s private life and appearance. In that interpretation, the title’s affirmative stance and the track’s outward-facing energy turn attention back toward the artist’s right to define herself. That is a reading of the song’s posture, not evidence that every lyric is a direct response to a particular person or incident.
Career stage, not a claim of equivalence
The feature compares Grande entering her thirties with Madonna’s career around age 30, invoking Like a Prayer as part of the comparison. The point is about the possibility of an artist reaching a consequential creative stage, not that Grande’s career or work is identical to Madonna’s. A parallel can suggest ambition and precedent without predicting the same outcome.

How Eternal Sunshine fits the argument
For Sheffield, the album makes the return feel high-stakes: it follows the reported hiatus in solo releases and arrives as Grande resumes a central role in pop after concentrating on the Wicked films. That makes Eternal Sunshine the larger context for the single’s boldness. The feature’s case is about timing, sound, and artistic posture—not a claim that the album guarantees a lasting change in Grande’s career.
One personal line reproduced in the feature helps convey the period’s reflective tone: “I’ve never felt more at the mercy of and in acceptance of what life was screaming to teach me,” Grande wrote, as quoted by Sheffield. What the feature does—and does not—establish
The case for a bold era rests on an interpretive chain: a return after time away from solo releases, a dance-pop single that Sheffield connects to Madonna, and an album arriving at a meaningful point in Grande’s career. Readers can reasonably find the argument persuasive without treating “boldest” as an objective ranking or an announcement from Grande.
The March 2024 feature is a snapshot of that release moment. It does not establish Grande’s current tour plans, future releases, or what she intends to do next. Nor should its critical comparison be mistaken for a measurable claim about chart performance, sales, or streaming: no such statistic is needed to make Sheffield’s argument.
