Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete, lied to Gayle King in April 2022 when King asked whether she had a sexual relationship with Tory Lanez. Pete later admitted the denial was false. At Lanez’s trial in December 2022 she said they had been intimate and that embarrassment had kept her from saying so. She has also said she expected the interview to be about the shooting, and that the sex question seemed irrelevant to that subject.
The admission is narrow. Pete lied about the relationship. She did not withdraw her account that Lanez shot her, and the jury’s guilty verdict rested on the trial evidence, not on her interview answer.

What Pete said in the CBS interview
Gayle King interviewed Pete on CBS Mornings in April 2022 about the July 2020 shooting in the Hollywood Hills. King asked whether Pete and Lanez had had an intimate relationship. According to The Independent’s later report of the exchange, Pete replied: “Like sexual? Umm, I didn’t have a sexual relationship with Tory.” The Independent quoted the exchange from the broadcast; a complete CBS transcript was not used to verify the wording, so treat the phrasing as the reported version.
What she admitted at trial
Pete testified at Lanez’s trial in December 2022. As reported by the Los Angeles Times on December 13, 2022, she acknowledged that she had lied about the relationship and said that the two had been intimate. The Times reported that embarrassment was her reason for not revealing it earlier. In testimony she asked: “How could I share my body with someone who would shoot me?”

That answer explains why she felt exposed. It does not, by itself, establish anything about the shooting. Intimacy between two people does not show who fired a gun, and the defense used the relationship and the surrounding evidence to challenge her account.
Her explanation in the documentary
In the 2024 documentary In Her Words, Pete returned to the King interview. The Independent quoted her saying: “Yes, b****. I lied to Gayle King, b****. First of all, I ain’t know that b**** was even finna ask me about that s***. I thought we was gonna talk about this shooting.” Profanity is retained as reported. King responded publicly with affection and respect, saying: “I have nothing but great, great love and respect for Megan Thee Stallion.”

These are Pete’s own reasons, and they should be attributed to her. Her account is that she was not prepared for the question and thought it was off-topic. Nothing in the reporting shows what she privately intended beyond those statements.

What the admission does and does not change
The headline can suggest a broader retraction than the record supports. The documented change is about whether Pete and Lanez had a sexual relationship. It is not a retraction of her claim that Lanez shot her.

Lanez denied wrongdoing throughout. The trial coverage reported defense arguments and disputes over the evidence, which should be presented as contested. The jury convicted him in December 2022 of assault and weapons offenses connected to the shooting. That verdict is a separate fact from Pete’s admission about the interview, and it should not be read as a finding about the relationship.

The Associated Press reported in 2025 that the California appellate court rejected Lanez’s claims of trial error and affirmed the conviction. The report said he could petition the California Supreme Court. Later filings may have occurred since then, so check the court docket before describing the current status of the case.
