Pam Ferris chose to leave Call the Midwife in 2016, after about four years playing Sister Evangelina. The show then ended the character’s story by killing her off. Published reporting attributes the departure decision to Ferris, but it does not establish a specific reason for it, so the explanation below separates what is documented from what is only speculation.
Two separate decisions
Sister Evangelina’s exit involved two decisions made by different parties. Ferris decided to leave the role. The programme then wrote the character out through her death. Reporting on the actor’s choice and reporting on the character’s fate should not be merged, because the available sources cover them separately.

What the reporting establishes
- Tenure: What to Watch’s 2024 cast-departure feature says Ferris played Sister Evangelina for four years and that the character was killed off. The four-year figure is approximate, and the article does not describe the exact episode or plot circumstances of the death.
- Departure year: TV Insider reports that Ferris opted to leave in 2016.
- Series 4 presence: The BBC Programme Index lists Ferris as Sister Evangelina in Series 4, Episode 6, first broadcast on 22 February 2015. That confirms she was still in the role during Series 4. It does not identify her final appearance, so no final episode or exact exit date is given here.
Ferris’s own words on leaving
TV Insider relays a statement Ferris gave to Radio Times: “Making the decision to leave Call the Midwife was a wrench.” She added that she would miss her friends on set, “in front of and behind the camera.” Because this quotation reaches readers through a secondary report, it should be attributed to TV Insider’s account of the Radio Times interview rather than presented as a verbatim transcript of the original conversation.
How the character left the series
Sister Evangelina was written out by being killed off. BBC material describes her as physically vigorous, effective at her work, humorous and blunt. Those are descriptions of the character, not an account of why the actor stepped away from the role.

Explanations the reporting does not support
Fan discussion has linked Ferris’s exit to health, filming locations, travel, commuting or scheduling. None of these appears as an established reason in the published reporting, and none should be presented as fact. An older BBC interview describes filming as physically and emotionally demanding, but it was not connected to the 2016 departure and should not be read as an explanation for it.
Her comments on television pace
In the 2024 What to Watch feature, Ferris criticised the speed of contemporary television: “Television has speeded up so much that it’s very hard. Attempting to create three-dimensional characters takes time and hard work. But TV now tends to be happy with two dimensions – and sometimes even one. I can’t work like that.” The article does not tie this remark to her leaving Call the Midwife. It shows her broader view of how modern series are written, and nothing more.

The available reporting confirms that Ferris made the decision, that it was reported as a difficult one, and that it came in 2016 after roughly four years in the role. It does not confirm why she made it. Anyone quoting a specific personal or practical cause for her departure is going beyond the published record.
