Yellowstone’s season 5 finale was the series finale of the original show. The episode closed the main five-season Dutton ranch story, even though the wider franchise kept going in separate programs. Much of the confusion comes from how season 5 was released, a long gap before its final episodes, Kevin Costner’s absence from those episodes, and franchise announcements that made the story seem open-ended. As of October 8, 2026, the original series is complete, and its follow-ups carry different titles.
What the season 5 finale actually ended
The original Yellowstone series concluded with the last episode of season 5. The show is listed as a completed five-season program, and Peacock’s catalog page for the series lists all five seasons. The episode the catalog highlights is “Life Is a Promise.” Viewers who expected a sixth season of Yellowstone will not find one; no sixth season of the original title has been announced in the sources reviewed.
What the finale did not do is close the wider Dutton universe. Paramount has since released two separate programs that carry characters forward, and those are where the story continues. Treating them as Yellowstone season 6 is the most common source of error, and it is worth keeping the titles straight.
Why the finale did not feel like a series finale
Several factors combined to make the ending feel like just another season break. Each one is documented, but none on its own explains the whole effect.

The two-part season 5
Season 5 was released in two parts. Paramount’s official Yellowstone page identifies the start of the second part, often called season 5B, as November 10, 2024. Viewers who watched the first part in 2022 and then waited two years for the rest had a long pause in which the show’s future was discussed in the press. A split season makes it harder to tell where a season ends and a series ends.
Kevin Costner’s absence from the final episodes
The Associated Press reported in November 2023 that the final installment had been delayed until November 2024 and that Costner would not return for the final episodes. The departure of the show’s central character before the end made the closing chapters feel like a handoff rather than a conclusion. The sources reviewed show that his absence was a major production and story context, but they do not show that his departure alone caused the finale’s wording or the audience confusion.

Franchise projects announced in 2023
The same AP report described sequel and prequel projects that Paramount had announced in 2023. Those projects were reported under working titles, and they were not proof that the original series would return for a sixth season. Their existence, however, made it reasonable for viewers to assume the story would keep going somewhere. Those working-title details should be read as early plans, not as current status.
The “season finale” wording
Promotional and episode-level language sometimes described the final episode as a season finale rather than a series finale. A public fan discussion from December 12, 2024 asked, “Why did they keep saying ‘season’ finale instead of ‘series’ finale?” That post is one example of how viewers phrased the question. It does not measure how widespread the confusion was. The sources reviewed contain no statement from Paramount or the show’s creators explaining the choice of words, so no reason should be assumed.

Dutton Ranch
Dutton Ranch follows Beth and Rip as they try to build a future away from Montana. Paramount reported 12.9 million global viewers in the seven days after the May 15, 2026 premiere and described it as the biggest original-series launch in Paramount+ history. That figure is Paramount’s own reporting, not an independent audience measurement.
Marshals
Marshals is a separate CBS series that follows Kayce Dutton. It is not a new season of the original show, even though it is part of the same franchise. Its official materials list an October 4, 2026 premiere, so readers checking schedules should confirm the broadcast and streaming times for their own region.

Where to watch the original series
Peacock’s catalog page lists all five seasons of the original Yellowstone. Streaming catalogs change by country and over time, so a title listed in one region may not be available in another or may move to a different service. Check the current listing in your region before planning a rewatch of the full series.
What the evidence does not establish
- Why promotional and episode-level copy used “season finale” instead of “series finale.” No explanation from Paramount or the creators appears in the sources reviewed.
- How many viewers were confused. The December 2024 fan post is a single example of phrasing, not a survey.
- Whether Costner’s departure caused the finale’s wording or the audience’s uncertainty. The sources document the departure but do not link it to either.
- Whether the 2023 sequel and prequel working titles match the titles now on air. Current status comes from the 2026 Paramount announcements listed above.
For readers who want the short version: the original Yellowstone ended with season 5, and the Dutton stories that followed are Dutton Ranch and Marshals.
