Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck divorced after a mediated settlement, but the public record does not establish one private cause for the breakup. Lopez’s court filing gives a formal legal ground and a separation date. Affleck has offered a personal, retrospective account in a 2025 interview. Neither amounts to a full explanation of what happened between them, and this article separates the two.
What the court filing says
Lopez filed for divorce in Los Angeles County Superior Court on August 20, 2024, roughly two years after the couple married in July 2022. The petition cited “irreconcilable differences,” the standard no-fault language used in California dissolution filings. Reporting based on the court documents also gives April 26, 2024, as the date of separation.

Those are two different facts. The filing date is when Lopez opened the case. The separation date is a reference point the filing uses for legal purposes, and it does not describe events on that day or explain why the marriage ended.
What Ben Affleck has said
In a March 2025 interview with GQ, as reproduced by ELLE, Affleck described the breakup without pointing to a single trigger:

“Yeah, there’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no: ‘This is what happened.’ It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do.”
Affleck also said that the couple’s different attitudes toward publicity were not the cause of a “major fracture.” That is his characterization of the relationship, not a joint statement from both parties. Lopez’s consulted public statements do not offer a specific private reason for the split.

What unnamed sources reported at the time
Contemporary coverage, including a Los Angeles Times report, described differences in how the two approached public attention. Some of those claims came from unnamed sources. They are reporting on what people said privately, not confirmed facts, and they should be attributed that way. Affleck’s later comments are the only on-record response from either party that addresses this theme directly.
Comparing the sources
| Source | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Court filing (August 2024), as reported from court documents | The legal ground (“irreconcilable differences”) and the April 26, 2024 separation date | Any private events, conduct, or reasons behind the separation |
| Affleck, GQ interview (March 2025), as reproduced by ELLE | His personal view that there was no single dramatic event and that differing attitudes toward publicity were not a major fracture | A complete account from both parties |
| Contemporary reports citing unnamed sources (including the Los Angeles Times) | That some people described differences in publicity preferences | That those differences caused the split; the claims are unverified |
| Settlement reporting (Associated Press) | No children together, no spousal support, mediated settlement, most financial terms private | Why the relationship ended |
Timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| July 2022 | The couple marries |
| April 26, 2024 | Separation date reported in the filing |
| August 20, 2024 | Lopez files in Los Angeles County Superior Court |
| January 6, 2025 | A judge approves the settlement |
| February 21, 2025 | The divorce takes effect |
The divorce is final and is not pending. According to Associated Press reporting on the settlement, the couple had no children together, neither would pay the other spousal support, and most financial terms remained private. Those terms show how the case was resolved, not why it happened.

Online speculation has linked the split to infidelity, money, their documentary, their house, canceled tour dates, and personality differences. None of these is established by the court filing, the settlement reporting, or either party’s on-record statements. Treat them as rumor unless a named source or court record confirms them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge a claim about the breakup
- Check whether it comes from the court record, an on-the-record quote, or anonymous sourcing.
- Separate the filing’s legal language from a description of private events.
- Note whether a claim is from one party’s perspective, and whether the other party has responded.
- Be cautious with any account that treats a settlement term or a date as proof of cause.
Read this way, the public record supports a narrow conclusion: the couple married in 2022, separated in April 2024, filed for divorce that August, and finalized the settlement in early 2025. Why they separated has not been established in any source that can be verified.
