She described a complicated relationship, painful moments that made her feel like a rival, and the need for boundaries. In a 2020 interview about her memoir, Carey said that experience shaped how she parents: she tries to recognize her children’s creativity and help them feel safe, heard and unconditionally loved. These are Carey’s recollections and interpretation of private family events, not independently verified accounts.
What Carey recalled her mother saying
Carey described her mother, Patricia, as a trained opera singer who introduced her to music and encouraged her ambitions. As Carey recalled it, Patricia urged her to say “when I make it” rather than “if I make it.” Carey also remembered a painful change in their relationship as her own musical ability developed.
During a singing session, Carey said, her mother told her she should hope to become half the singer Patricia was. Carey recalled feeling that she had become “the competition.” In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she described a shift from their earlier bond to a connection she experienced as tethered by “shared biology and social obligation.” The Independent quoted that passage in its September 29, 2020 coverage of the memoir and interview: The Independent’s report.
Carey said the remark stayed with her. Her account holds two things together: her mother helped nurture her musical ambitions, and Carey also remembers feeling diminished and treated as a rival.

How Carey said the experience affected her parenting
In a 2020 interview with Gayle King, Carey said she consciously tries to respond differently when her children share their creative work. “With my kids, I really try to acknowledge their talent and acknowledge when they draw a picture for me or sing or dance or anything that they do,” she said. She wants them to know “it’s also all about them and their happiness.”
Carey also said it mattered to her that her children feel safe, seen, heard and unconditionally loved. She connected that priority to her own childhood experiences, telling King, “That’s very important to me because growing up and being alone in the house or alone in these dangerous situations was traumatising.” CBS News reported the interview on September 27, 2020: CBS News’ interview report.

Her point was not that every moment with her children must revolve around praise. Rather, Carey described making a deliberate effort to notice what they create and to center their well-being—an approach she linked to what she felt was missing or painful in her own relationship with her mother.
Did Mariah Carey completely cut off her mother?
The available accounts do not establish a complete estrangement. Carey spoke of a complicated relationship and boundaries, not a definitive, total cutoff. A 2024 retrospective discussing her memoir describes the relationship as involving an ongoing gray area in which Carey allowed her mother into her life at times: Goalcast’s retrospective.

Patricia Carey died in 2024, as reported by El País on August 27 of that year: El País’ report. The cited reporting does not establish the details of their final contact, so it cannot support claims about whether they reconciled or were estranged at the end of Patricia’s life.
