Robert Plant said in 2023 that he, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones consider licensing proposals together, rejecting scenes they find uncomfortable or wrong for the music. Their examples—from School of Rock to Argo—suggest that context, creative fit, and control over how a song is presented matter more than a simple yes-or-no rule.
Why does Led Zeppelin turn down some placements?
Plant’s clearest explanation is artistic judgment. In a 2023 interview, he said the three surviving members involved in these decisions review proposals collectively: “When there’s something uncomfortable, unpleasant or overtly just not the right place for our music to be, we say no.” TheWrap reported Plant’s remarks.

Plant also described the kind of project they hope to find: “The music is dynamic. There it is, sitting there, and happily waiting for romance or nuance or drive that link to a film with substance. But those are hard to come by.” That points to a demanding standard for a scene’s tone and purpose, rather than a blanket refusal to let filmmakers use the catalog.
Have Led Zeppelin songs appeared in movies and TV?
Yes. Several approved placements show that a convincing context can meet the band’s standards.

School of Rock (2003)
“Immigrant Song” appeared in the film after Jack Black made a personal video appeal to the band. Plant later praised Black’s treatment of the song and said, “To give it to the kids is important.” He saw the use as a way to bring the music to a younger audience. Louder reported Plant’s comments.
Argo (2012)
Ben Affleck pursued permission to use “When the Levee Breaks” in Argo. According to the Los Angeles Times account, the band approved the use but asked for a record-player shot to be digitally adjusted so the needle landed in the correct position on the album. The detail illustrates that approval can involve attention to how the song and its physical presentation appear in a scene.

NBC’s Revolution (2012)
“Kashmir” and “Since I’ve Been Loving You” featured in the NBC series. CBS News, citing the Associated Press, connected the arrangement to Warner Bros. Television’s relationship with Warner Music Group’s publishing division and promotion of the band’s Celebration Day release. That case shows that business coordination and a suitable campaign can accompany an approval; it does not establish a formula for every decision.
Does it cost a lot to license a Led Zeppelin song?
Historical reporting helps explain the band’s reputation for being difficult to license, but it should not be mistaken for a current price. In 2012, the Los Angeles Times reported that asking prices for film uses were often near seven figures and described the process of securing approval as requiring persistence. That was a report about the market at that time—not a current rate card, a universal fee for every song, or evidence that money is the main reason for refusals.

The strongest direct explanation from Plant is about whether a project and scene suit the music. The available accounts do not provide a complete record of rejected proposals, explain every past decision, or disclose current fees and contract procedures.

Led Zeppelin also approved a major screen project about the band itself. In a May 2024 announcement, Sony Pictures Classics said it acquired distribution rights in a specified set of territories for Becoming Led Zeppelin, calling it the first officially sanctioned film about the group. That demonstrates approval of a substantial documentary about the band; it does not mean the group’s standards for unrelated film or television placements have changed.
