Mike Myers did not stop working. His visibility in feature films declined, and he has said that his own projects take years to reach audiences. His return to prominent on-screen work came through character-driven projects: a disguised host on the revived The Gong Show in 2017, and The Pentaverate, a 2022 Netflix series he created and in which he played eight characters. The sources reviewed for this article do not establish one definitive personal reason for the quieter period.
What “disappearing” actually meant
The gap was a drop in how often audiences saw Myers, not an absence from creative life. Myers rose to fame through Saturday Night Live and Wayne’s World, then built his best-known characters through Austin Powers and the Shrek franchise. The festival press-kit biography for Myers from the Festival de Cannes summarizes those milestones along with his writing, acting and producing work. That document’s publication date is not established, so treat its career summary as background rather than a dated record.
When people say Myers disappeared, they usually mean fewer leading roles in theatrical films. That is a narrower claim than “stopped working,” and the difference matters for understanding what happened next.
The development clock: why projects took so long
The most direct explanation for the apparent gap comes from Myers himself. In a 2007 interview with Hollywood.com, promoting Shrek the Third, he was asked about keeping a low profile and answered by describing how long original work takes. His words were: “I write everything I do.”

In the same interview he estimated that a project could take about 60 months, roughly five years, from idea to audience, and said he was usually about three years ahead of what the public was seeing. He also said he was starting The Love Guru after a year of development. These are Myers’s own estimates from that interview, not a verified average across his career. The interview is dated June 2007 by its promotional context, although some archived copies of the page carry a different date, so the 2007 date is the one the interview itself supports.
This account helps explain why audiences could see long stretches between releases. It does not prove that development timing was the reason for every quiet period.

The first comeback: Tommy Maitland on The Gong Show
In 2017 Myers returned to a regular television role as Tommy Maitland, a fictional English presenter on the revived The Gong Show. He stayed in disguise, and the production did not confirm he was the person behind Maitland until January 2018.
In a June 2018 Vanity Fair interview, Myers explained why he took the job. He described the original show’s tone: “There was something punk rock about the show . . . It was show business, but it had absolutely no ambition in it whatsoever—it was ambition-free.” His idea was to play the host as a created character with a backstory. In his words: “I just thought, if I’m doing this almost deconstruction of a talent show, I should be the ringmaster who is also deconstructed.”

The return was a creative choice that fit his long history of character work. It was not evidence that he had been absent from all creative activity.
The second comeback: The Pentaverate
In 2022 Myers returned to a more prominent starring and creative role with The Pentaverate, a Netflix comedy series. It grew out of a joke from So I Married an Axe Murderer, which Myers developed into a full series. He created it, served as showrunner and executive producer, and played eight parts.

What the evidence does not explain
The sources reviewed for this article do not establish several explanations that often circulate for Myers’s quieter period. Treat each of the following as unsupported unless better evidence appears:
- That he left Hollywood for family reasons.
- That he had enough money to retire.
- That he was blacklisted.
- That the reception of a particular film drove him away.
Nor should The Pentaverate be described as a full-time return to movie stardom. It was a television series and a documented creative milestone.
Where his career stands now
The latest documented milestone in the sources reviewed for this article is The Pentaverate in 2022. Those sources do not establish his projects or activity after that year, so this article cannot confirm his current status as of October 2026. For recent work, check trade press coverage and Myers’s own public announcements, and look for dates on any claim about a new project.
