No definitive public explanation establishes why Lara Flynn Boyle did not return for Twin Peaks: The Return. In 2017, David Lynch was asked about absent original cast members, including Boyle, and gave no specific reason. His reported remarks do not establish whether Boyle was invited or whether she declined.
What David Lynch said about the absent cast
A 2017 report from TheWrap says Lynch offered no specifics about Boyle and other original cast members who were not in the revival. He indicated that he and those actors had more or less agreed to move forward without them. The report does not clarify what that meant for Boyle individually.

TheWrap also quoted Lynch saying, “These days people love strange Hollywood side stories that have nothing to do with the film.” That remark was not a direct explanation of Boyle’s absence, and it should not be read as one.
Her absence from the 1992 film is a separate question
Boyle also did not play Donna Hayward in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, the 1992 film; Moira Kelly played the character instead. TheWrap reported in 2017 that the reason Boyle was absent from the film was unclear. It mentioned scheduling conflicts as a circulating explanation, not as a confirmed fact: TheWrap’s account of Donna’s recasting.

That earlier casting change does not explain the decision about The Return. The Guardian’s 2017 preview described the revival’s connection to Laura Palmer’s final seven days, which are central to Fire Walk With Me, but story continuity is not evidence of a casting reason: The Guardian’s revival overview.

What the public record establishes—and what it does not
- Established: Boyle was not listed among the returning cast in a 2017 overview by TIME, and contemporary reporting records Lynch’s nonspecific response about absent original actors.
- Not established: The available reporting does not give Boyle’s own reason, say whether she received an invitation, or confirm that she turned one down.
- Unconfirmed: Scheduling conflicts have been mentioned in connection with her absence from the 1992 film, but that account is uncertain and does not answer why she was absent from the 2017 series.
