Thomas Gibson left Criminal Minds because ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios dismissed him in August 2016 after an on-set disagreement with writer-producer Virgil Williams. Separately, the show gave his character, Aaron Hotchner, an on-screen reason to leave: Hotchner entered witness protection with his son Jack after the villain Mr. Scratch targeted the boy, and he resigned from the FBI. The question has two answers because it concerns two different things, the real-world departure of an actor and the fictional departure of a character.
Two layers of the same question
Readers searching this topic usually want one of two things. Some want to know why Gibson was let go. Others want to know how the show explained Hotch’s absence. The sources reviewed for this article answer each question separately, and they do not overlap.

- The real-world reason: Gibson was dismissed from the series, and the studios confirmed it. The studios did not publicly describe the incident in detail.
- The on-screen reason: Hotchner left to protect Jack from a threat posed by Peter Lewis, known as Mr. Scratch. That is a plot device written after the actor’s departure, not an account of why the actor left.
What the studios announced
On August 12, 2016, ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios announced that Gibson’s employment on the series had ended. The announcement did not say what happened on set. CBS News and the Associated Press reported the news the same day, and their coverage included Gibson’s own short statement, which is the only on-the-record description of the dispute that the studios’ side has been linked to in that reporting.
Gibson’s statement read: “There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement. I regret that it occurred.” He framed the matter as a creative disagreement. He did not say who was involved beyond the broader set, and he did not describe any physical contact in that statement.

Gibson’s later account
Gibson spoke more fully in September 2016. In an interview with People, quoted by ABC News on September 23, 2016, he said he would have done some things differently, but he did not believe the incidents added up to a firing. He said: “If I had the chance to do some things differently, I might. But there is a context to each of these incidents and I think that they don’t add up to what ended up happening.”
CBS News and ET Online, reporting on October 6, 2016, carried a further account from Gibson of the scene itself. In that version, the dispute concerned a line he believed contradicted an earlier line, and he described the exchange with Williams this way: “He said, ‘Sorry, it’s necessary, and I absolutely have to have it.'” He also described the physical contact: “As he brushed past me, my foot came up and tapped him on the leg.”

These are Gibson’s descriptions, not established findings. Neither the studios nor Williams, as far as the reporting cited here shows, has issued a detailed public version that confirms or contradicts them. Readers should treat the account as one party’s view of a disputed exchange.
How the show wrote Hotch out
The initial gap
Hotchner’s whereabouts were left unclear after Gibson’s final episode. That episode aired on October 5, 2016, according to CBS News’ October 6 report, and it gave little immediate explanation for the character’s absence.

The November 2016 explanation
The series answered the question on November 16, 2016, according to TVLine’s recap of the episode. Hotchner and Jack entered witness protection because the threat from Mr. Scratch made it unsafe for them to stay. Hotchner resigned from the FBI to keep his son safe. The storyline gave the character a complete exit, but it was written to fit the fiction rather than to describe the production’s decision.

What is and is not established
- Established: Gibson was dismissed in August 2016, and the studios confirmed the dismissal.
- Established: Gibson publicly described a creative disagreement and said he regretted that it occurred.
- Not established: A full, independently confirmed account of the on-set incident. The studios’ announcement gave no details, and the accounts that followed came mainly from Gibson.
- Established as fiction: Hotchner’s witness-protection storyline and his resignation, as revealed in November 2016.
Gibson’s own description of the exchange is the most detailed version available in the reporting cited here. Anyone who wants more than that will need sources published after 2016 that go beyond both the studios’ announcement and Gibson’s account.
Rank #4
Because all of the detailed material dates from 2016, it reflects what was known and said at that time. Gibson and the studios may have said more later, but this article does not rely on such statements.
