In a 2023 interview, Megan Fox asked why people were so fascinated by her thumbs. The question points back to a celebrity-media moment that began years earlier: by June 2009, TMZ had singled out the feature and invited readers to judge it in photographs. The available examples show how a small detail of a highly photographed person’s appearance became public commentary—not why every individual cared.
How Fox’s thumbs became a subject of coverage
TMZ’s 2009 framing
On June 11, 2009, TMZ published an item titled “Thumbs Down on Megan Fox”. It called her thumbs a possible “flaw,” noted that observers used different descriptions, and ended by asking readers to look at pictures and judge for themselves. That framing turned a feature of Fox’s appearance into an invitation for public visual scrutiny.
The item documents that the topic had entered celebrity coverage by that date. It does not establish that all critics or fans noticed it, or that they shared a particular reason for doing so. Nor does it quantify the discussion’s size or reach.
What Fox said about the attention
Her 2023 response
In a May 15, 2023, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit interview, Fox said she did not understand the fascination and had never considered her thumbs weird or embarrassing. As Parade reported, she said: “They’re just kind of short. Is it really that crazy?” The SI Swimsuit video listing confirms the interview item’s date and subject, though it does not provide a full transcript.

Fox also joked about a palmistry association between short thumbs and a short temper, calling it a “murderer’s thumb” and saying it took a lot to make her lose her temper. Palmistry is folklore; her anecdote is not evidence of a relationship between thumb shape and temperament.
Coverage labels are not a confirmed diagnosis
Parade describes Fox’s thumbs using terms including brachydactyly and “clubbed thumb.” The sources reviewed do not include a diagnosis from Fox or a clinician, so those labels should be understood as media descriptions, not established medical facts about her. The coverage also does not establish a cause, effect on function, or need for treatment.

The contrast between TMZ’s call to judge photographs and Fox’s matter-of-fact response offers one explanation for why the story remains notable: celebrity coverage can turn a visible detail into a topic for public comment, while the person being discussed may not see it as a problem. These two examples illustrate that dynamic; they cannot establish a universal motive for the attention.
