He has also said he enjoys the drink. But the available interview transcripts do not establish that he literally cannot go a day without it, or how much he drinks today.
What Gates has said about his Diet Coke habit
In a 2020 interview with Dax Shepard, Gates described himself as accustomed to caffeine and said he could sleep well despite drinking Diet Coke. He speculated that stopping might bring “a little bit of withdrawal,” but that was his personal expectation—not a clinical assessment of dependence or withdrawal. Read the interview transcript.

How much Diet Coke does Bill Gates drink?
Gates recalled that his consumption once peaked at 12 to 14 Diet Cokes a day in the conversation with Collison. That is a retrospective account of a past peak, not a figure for his current intake.

The frequently repeated claim that Gates drinks 35 a day came from Shepard, who guessed that number during the 2020 interview. Gates did not confirm it in the transcript. Neither figure establishes how much he drinks now.
Why the headline overstates what is known
“Cannot pass a day without” makes a stronger claim than the interviews support. Gates described a familiar caffeine habit, said he enjoyed the drink, and wondered whether stopping might cause some withdrawal. Those remarks explain his own reported reasons; they do not show that he is unable to go a day without Diet Coke. What Diet Coke is—and how it differs from Coca-Cola Zero Sugar
The Coca-Cola Company says Diet Coke launched in 1982. Its current U.S. product page lists both caffeinated and caffeine-free Diet Coke. The company describes Diet Coke as having a distinct lighter taste, while Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is intended to look and taste more like original Coca-Cola; both are described as sugar-free and calorie-free.
