On November 3, 2025, Whoopi Goldberg tore up a note that co-host Sunny Hostin passed to her during a live The View discussion. Hostin’s note asked Goldberg to clarify that the panel did not know whether Donald Trump had used an autopen to sign his pardon of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. Goldberg said her earlier remark was a joke, objected to the clarification, and kept talking after tearing up the card.
What led to the note
The segment grew out of the program’s discussion of Trump’s 60 Minutes interview and his pardon of Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance. Hostin questioned why Trump said he did not know Zhao, given that Trump had criticized former president Joe Biden over his use of an autopen. She said the Trump family had profited from government dealings and contrasted Trump’s stated lack of knowledge with Biden’s autopen use.
While Hostin was making that point, Goldberg interjected, “because he used an autopen.” That line was the trigger for the note. Reports describe Goldberg’s remark as a joke, and nothing in the contemporaneous coverage establishes that an autopen was used to sign the Zhao pardon.
What the note asked for
Hostin’s note asked Goldberg to clarify that the co-hosts did not know whether Trump had used an autopen for the pardon. The reports summarize the note’s substance rather than publishing its full wording, so the exact text is not available. The request concerned the panel’s lack of established knowledge, not a factual claim that an autopen had been used.

What happened on air
TheWrap places the exchange in the first Hot Topics discussion of the episode. Based on that coverage, the sequence was:
- Goldberg made a joke implying Trump used an autopen to sign the pardon.
- Hostin passed Goldberg a card while Goldberg was making a final point on the topic.
- Goldberg stopped to read the card and objected to the clarification request.
- She said, “When I’m making jokes, you know when I’m making jokes. This is ridiculous,” and tore the card up.
- Goldberg continued the discussion, and Hostin repeated the clarification on air, according to Fox News coverage.
Fox News also quoted Goldberg as saying, “We don’t know if Trump used an autopen to pardon, it was a joke!” That wording is consistent with the on-air objection: she was defending the joke, not asserting a fact.

What is and is not established
- Established: the exchange occurred on November 3, 2025, during the Trump-and-Zhao discussion; Hostin passed a note seeking clarification; Goldberg objected, described her remark as a joke, and tore the note up.
- Not established: that Trump used an autopen to sign the Zhao pardon; the note’s exact written wording; the reaction of viewers to the clip, since the reports provide no audience data for the moment itself.
Because the full ABC episode transcript was not available for this account, the description above relies on contemporaneous news reports of the broadcast, primarily Fox News and TheWrap, both dated November 3, 2025.
