On September 19, 2014, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal remembered their friend Robin Williams during a conversation on The View. Crystal was there to discuss his book, but the interview turned to Williams and Crystal’s difficult Emmy tribute the month before. ABC News reported that Goldberg became choked up as Crystal spoke about their friendship.
Why Billy Crystal was on The View
Crystal’s appearance was prompted by his book, Still Foolin’ ‘em: Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys? Goldberg interviewed him, and the conversation turned to Williams, who had died on August 11, 2014, at age 63, according to ABC News. This was a remembrance between longtime friends, not a newly staged tribute.

Crystal described the Emmy tribute as deeply difficult
At the Emmy Awards the previous month, Crystal paid tribute to Williams. Crystal said on The View: “It was one of the hardest, if not the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” ABC News reported. He said that after Williams died, he had initially been unable to find words.
Crystal recalled a close friendship that included private late-night phone calls and looking out for one another. ABC described Goldberg as visibly affected while he spoke; that account captures the reaction seen during the interview, not a claim about her private feelings.

Comic Relief brought the three friends together
Goldberg, Crystal and Williams grew close through Comic Relief, the fundraising work they did together. ABC News reported that the trio raised more than $70 million for homelessness in America through that work, attributing the figure to their Comic Relief efforts.
Crystal’s Emmy tribute also recalled a moment from Comic Relief Day in 1989. In the Shea Stadium broadcast booth with Goldberg and Williams, Williams joked that his favorite team was “The San Franciscos,” then improvised a story about being a Russian baseball player. MLB.com reproduced the anecdote from Crystal’s tribute.
