Whoopi Goldberg left The View table during a 2023 discussion, but she was not storming off over an argument: she went to take a selfie with a 91-year-old audience member. The genuinely heated walk-off happened in 2010, when Goldberg and Joy Behar both left during Bill O’Reilly’s appearance.
What happened when Goldberg left the table in 2023?
On July 19, 2023, Access reported on a segment from the previous Tuesday’s episode of The View. The hosts were discussing Miranda Lambert stopping her performance of “Tin Man” to address audience members taking a selfie.

Goldberg argued that concertgoers should show respect while Lambert was singing. Sunny Hostin responded that people who paid for VIP tickets should be free to take selfies. Hostin cited a price of $757 during the exchange; that was her on-air statement, not an independently verified or general VIP ticket price.
Goldberg then got up, approached a 91-year-old audience member, and said, “I’m leaving y’all. Because I want to take a picture with this marvelous woman who is 91. So we’re going to do a selfie. Me and you.” The moment drew laughter and happened before a commercial break, according to Access’s report.

Which walk-off was actually heated?
The political confrontation most associated with a heated View walk-off took place on October 14, 2010, during Bill O’Reilly’s appearance. The discussion concerned President Barack Obama’s position on Park51, a proposed Muslim community center near Ground Zero. ABC News’s retrospective says the exchange escalated after O’Reilly said, “Muslims killed us on 9/11.” Goldberg and Behar responded and left the interview together.
Behar later recalled that O’Reilly was making “sweeping generalizations about Muslims,” adding, “We just walked off on him.” O’Reilly responded at the time, “This is great. This is great, maybe Elisabeth [Hasselbeck] can interview me the whole hour.” ABC News recounts the event and the participants’ memories in its 2016 retrospective.

What about the viral clip involving Karoline Leavitt?
A 2025 viral video caption claimed Goldberg walked off The View during an explosive debate with Karoline Leavitt. Lead Stories reported that the clip was fabricated from spliced footage with AI-generated or editing artifacts, and that Leavitt had not appeared on The View as of the fact-check’s publication. It should not be treated as evidence of a real on-air walk-off. Lead Stories’ fact-check addresses the claim.
