Who Killed Nipsey Hussle? Eric Holder’s Murder Case, Seven Years Later

Eric Ronald Holder Jr. was convicted of first-degree murder in Nipsey Hussle’s 2019 killing and sentenced to 60 years to life. The conviction was upheld in 2024, and California’s Supreme Court declined review in January 2025.

Eric Ronald Holder Jr. was convicted of first-degree murder in the March 31, 2019, killing of rapper Nipsey Hussle. Holder is serving a sentence of 60 years to life in California state prison. An appeals court upheld the conviction in November 2024, and the California Supreme Court declined to review the case in January 2025.

Who killed Nipsey Hussle?

Eric Ronald Holder Jr. is the person convicted of killing Nipsey Hussle. A jury found Holder guilty of first-degree murder in July 2022, more than three years after the killing.

Reports differ on the full list of counts in the verdict. Because the accounts do not agree, this article identifies the first-degree murder conviction without presenting an unverified count list.

What happened in the murder case?

The 2022 verdict

In July 2022, a jury convicted Holder of first-degree murder. News reports also described verdicts involving attempted voluntary manslaughter and firearm possession, while another legal summary listed different firearm-related counts. The accounts agree on the murder conviction but not on the complete count list.

The judge rejects a reduced conviction and a new trial

In December 2022, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke rejected the defense request to reduce the conviction to second-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter. The judge also denied a motion for a new trial.

Sentence and appeals

In February 2023, Holder was sentenced to 60 years to life in state prison. On November 5, 2024, California’s Second District Court of Appeal upheld the conviction and sentence. The panel rejected challenges to a ruling on closing arguments and to the decision not to strike a 25-years-to-life firearm enhancement.

On January 15, 2025, the California Supreme Court declined to review the case. That refusal left the Court of Appeal’s ruling in place and ended the state appellate review described in the available reports.

How long is Eric Holder’s sentence?

Holder’s sentence is 60 years to life in California state prison. That is the imposed sentence; it does not mean release is scheduled after 60 years. The cited reports do not establish a release date or provide a later custody update.

Why the “six years later” title is outdated

Nipsey Hussle was killed on March 31, 2019. As of October 8, 2026, that was about seven years and six months ago, so “six years later” no longer fits. Six years later would place the framing around 2025, after the California Supreme Court’s January refusal to review Holder’s case.
