Ingrid Kersh’s father is Bob Gray, a human circus performer who worked as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Pennywise is not her biological father. The entity known as It killed Gray and took his likeness, so the clown Ingrid later meets is It wearing a dead man’s appearance.
What the series establishes about Bob Gray
In It: Welcome to Derry, the backstory identifies Ingrid as the daughter of Bob Gray. Gray was a real person and a circus performer. His act was built around the Pennywise the Dancing Clown persona, so “Pennywise” names a stage identity in this story rather than a separate being that was born into the role. GamesRadar+ describes Bob Gray as a human whose likeness It adopts, and links Ingrid’s childhood clown identity, Periwinkle, to her father’s act (GamesRadar+, Easter eggs and cameos).
Bob Gray, the human performer
Gray is the only person in this chain who was ever alive as a father to Ingrid. Everything the series shows about the clown act traces back to him, and his death is what opens the door for It to take his place.
How It takes his place
The sequence, as the secondary episode coverage describes it, runs in four steps:

- Comes in collector-friendly window box packaging with opening front flap.
- It is drawn to the effect the clown persona has on children.
- It lures Gray away from his act.
- It kills him.
- It wears his likeness as Pennywise, so the entity that appears later carries the identity of a man it has already destroyed.
Human identity, adopted persona and Ingrid’s belief
Three things are easy to blur together: the man, the clown identity, and the entity. The table separates them, along with what Ingrid believes when she meets the clown.
| Identity | What it is in the series | Relationship to Ingrid |
|---|---|---|
| Bob Gray | A human circus performer who played Pennywise the Dancing Clown; killed by It | Her father |
| Pennywise the Dancing Clown | The stage persona from Gray’s act, which It later wears | Not a parent; a costume-like identity tied to her father’s act |
| It | The entity that kills Gray and adopts his likeness | Not her father, despite appearing as the clown |
| Ingrid’s belief | She interprets the clown she meets as her father returned | A grief-driven interpretation, not the series’ objective account |
Ingrid’s reaction to the clown is an emotional reading of what she sees. The series’ own account is the one above: Gray is dead, and It is the one wearing his face.

The Juniper Hill scene and the link to Beverly Marsh
The finale adds a connection between Ingrid and Beverly Marsh. Men’s Health reports that Ingrid is at Juniper Hill when young Beverly encounters her after her mother’s death (Men’s Health, “It: Welcome to Derry Credits Scene, Explained,” December 15, 2025). GamesRadar+’s episode 8 explainer also draws out this link to the wider story (GamesRadar+, episode 8 explained).
That scene gives the later Mrs. Kersh encounter in It: Chapter Two an earlier point of contact. Beverly has seen Ingrid before the events of the films. This is the series reframing the later scene, not proof that every appearance of Mrs. Kersh is the literal elderly Ingrid. The entity can use frightening forms and memories, and the Mrs. Kersh guise is one of them.

The line attributed to Ingrid
Men’s Health attributes this line to Ingrid speaking to Beverly in the finale: “No one who dies here ever really dies.” It fits the series’ view of Derry and Mrs. Kersh’s unsettling presence. Quotations here come from secondary episode coverage, so check the exact wording against the episode before quoting it at length.

If you summarize the characters, keep the names separate: Bob Gray is the man, Pennywise is the clown identity from his act, It is the entity that wears that identity, Ingrid is the real woman, and Mrs. Kersh is a form It uses in the films. Stephen King’s novel It is the source work for the wider story, but the show’s Bob Gray backstory is not reproduced in every detail in the book.
