Erica May-Scherzer is Max Scherzer’s wife. Public reporting presents her as a mother of several children and as an advocate for animal welfare, particularly through her past work with the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA). Beyond that, the available reporting is thin: it does not establish her current job, her education, or whether her earlier nonprofit board role continues.
Who she is, as public reporting describes her
Major League Baseball’s own coverage identifies her as Erica May-Scherzer, and it has been the most consistent source for the couple’s family news. Beyond her marriage to the pitcher, the reporting centers on two things: her role as a parent and her public support for rescue animals. Coverage of her personal life generally comes from family interviews and team announcements rather than from any biographical profile, so anything beyond those points should be read as unverified.
The children, by source and date
The family details in circulation come from different years, and they do not all describe the same moment. The table below separates what each source says and when it was published.
| Source | Date of report | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| MLB announcement (2017) | 2017 | The couple announced the birth of their first child, Brooklyn, on November 29, 2017. |
| MLB report on the 2021 birth | May 2021 | Erica gave birth to a son, Derek, on May 2, 2021, on the day Max pitched a complete game against Miami and then went directly to the hospital. |
| MLB media guide | 2022 | Lists the children as daughters Brooklyn, Kacey, and Nikki, and son Derek. |
| Associated Press | February 2026 | Describes a handwritten letter from one of the daughters, named in the report as Brooke, posted by Erica. The spelling does not match the MLB listing, and the reporting does not resolve the difference. |
The 2022 media guide is a snapshot of that year. It is the most complete family list in the coverage reviewed, but it is not a confirmed current roster, and the reporting does not state the ages of the children today.

Her own account of family life
In a September 2020 interview with Washington FAMILY Magazine, Erica described the difficulty of keeping family routines when baseball’s travel and changing seasons dictate the schedule. She said she tries to wake one or two hours before her children, and that the family enjoys hiking and other outdoor activities near their home at that time. These are her own descriptions from 2020, not a current account of where the family lives or what its daily routine looks like.
Her central point was about structure:
“I think in this life—with baseball—it’s finding routines.”

The interviewer said the conversation covered raising a family in the Washington, D.C. area, volunteering, and self-care. Those topics were discussed, but the interview does not establish a professional occupation or a fuller biography.
Animal-welfare work with the Humane Rescue Alliance
The Washington Post reported in July 2019 that Erica and Max had worked with HRA since 2016. The couple supported adoption-fee efforts and encouraged fans to pledge donations for each of Max’s strikeouts, with the couple matching the funds raised. The article described Erica as an HRA board member at that time and quoted HRA’s chief communications officer, who described her as knowledgeable about animal welfare and nonprofit management.

Asked about her motivation, Erica said:
“They don’t really have a voice for themselves, so I like being able to kind of use our platform and our opportunities to give a voice to animals.”
The strikeout campaign had raised more than $17,000 at the time of that 2019 report. That is a historical campaign figure, not a current total, and the reporting does not say whether the campaign continues. The board role should be treated the same way: it was current in 2019, and the sources reviewed do not confirm that it still applies.

Recent public context
In February 2026, the Associated Press reported that Erica posted a handwritten letter from one of her daughters asking the Toronto Blue Jays to bring Max back. The report describes the post and the note itself. It is a recent family anecdote, and it says nothing about Erica’s career or public role.

- Current occupation: No reviewed source gives a verified job title for Erica.
- Education: No reviewed source describes her schooling or degrees.
- Current HRA role: Her board membership is documented for 2019 only.
- Current family roster: The most recent full list is from the 2022 media guide.
Until a dated source addresses these points, treat them as open questions rather than facts about her life.
