Michaela Stirling is John Stirling’s cousin in Netflix’s Bridgerton, played by Masali Baduza. She is the television adaptation’s gender-swapped counterpart to Michael Stirling, a lead character in Julia Quinn’s sixth Bridgerton novel, When He Was Wicked, which tells Francesca’s story. She is not a character who appears under that name in the books.
Who Michaela is in the series
Michaela makes her first appearance at the final ball in the Season 3 finale, which takes place after Francesca Bridgerton and John Stirling’s wedding. Netflix identifies her as John’s cousin and notes that the newlyweds are preparing to travel to Scotland. Her introduction is the setup for what follows the wedding, not a reveal about Francesca’s past.

How she maps to the novel’s Michael Stirling
The link between the two characters is a deliberate change made for the screen. Netflix’s official explainer, published June 14, 2024 on Tudum, describes Michaela as a gender-swapped version of Michael, who is a lead character in When He Was Wicked. The same explainer places the novel as the sixth book in Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series and identifies it as Francesca’s story.
That distinction matters when you read or write about the franchise. The novel has Michael; the series has Michaela. Describing Michaela as “the character from the book” overstates the match, because the show has adapted a counterpart rather than carried over the same person.

What is confirmed about Season 5
Netflix has announced Hannah Dodd as Francesca Stirling and Masali Baduza as Michaela Stirling, the two leads of Season 5. Netflix’s Season 5 announcement, dated October 1, 2026 on Tudum, says the season is in production and scheduled to air in 2027. It describes the story as inspired by When He Was Wicked.
No exact premiere date has been announced in that material, so any specific month should be treated as unconfirmed. Plot details for Season 5 are not established at this point, and anything beyond the lead casting and the source inspiration should be read as speculation until Netflix releases it.

Quoting the showrunner
On the Michaela introduction, Tudum quotes showrunner Jess Brownell on the direction of Francesca’s story: “Part of Francesca’s exploration going forward will be about whether or not there is in fact something missing.” That remark points toward Francesca’s arc in the coming seasons, and it is a statement about the story’s direction rather than a confirmed plot point.

- Use “Michaela Stirling” when discussing the show, and “Michael Stirling” when discussing the novel.
- Say “counterpart” or “gender-swapped version,” not “the same character.”
- Separate what has aired (her Season 3 introduction) from what has only been announced (Season 5 with her as a lead).
Readers searching for “Is Michaela Stirling in the Bridgerton books?” can answer no by name, but the book’s Michael Stirling is the character the adaptation is built from.
