Kokushibo is Upper Rank One, the highest position among the Upper Ranks of Muzan Kibutsuji’s demon organization in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He fights with Moon Breathing combined with demonic power that produces crescent-shaped attacks. His story, including who he was before he became a demon, belongs to the later manga arcs, so this article separates the basic character role from the spoiler material.
Where Kokushibo sits in Muzan’s organization
Upper Rank One is the top tier of the Upper Ranks, the most powerful demons serving Muzan Kibutsuji. Kokushibo holds that position. Readers who know only the early story should treat him as the strongest member of the demon hierarchy, a figure whose rank marks him as a major threat to the Demon Slayer Corps.
Spoiler warning: who he was before he became a demon
Spoiler warning: The sections below cover Kokushibo’s human identity and his relationship with Yoriichi Tsugikuni. These details come from the later manga story. If you are reading the series for the first time, stop here.
Before he became a demon, Kokushibo was Michikatsu Tsugikuni, the twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni. The twin reveal gives his conflict a personal dimension. Both brothers came from the same background, but Yoriichi’s exceptional swordsmanship and Michikatsu’s consuming ambition as a swordsman pulled them in opposite directions.

Human and demon: the two identities compared
| Aspect | Michikatsu Tsugikuni (before becoming a demon) | Kokushibo (Upper Rank One) |
|---|---|---|
| Family role | Twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni | Same character, now a demon |
| Central drive | Ambition as a swordsman, shaped by envy of Yoriichi | Carries the same conflict into his demonic role |
| Position | Not applicable | Upper Rank One, the highest Upper Rank |
| Combat identity | Swordsman | Moon Breathing with demonic abilities, including crescent-shaped attacks |
His rivalry with Yoriichi
The brothers’ rivalry is the emotional core of Kokushibo’s story. Yoriichi’s talent set a standard that Michikatsu could not match, and the envy that followed shaped the choices that eventually made him a demon. Read this as a contrast between two people who started with the same family background and reached very different outcomes.
Combat: Moon Breathing and demonic power
Kokushibo’s fighting style is Moon Breathing, a sword style that his demonic abilities extend. The secondary character explainer describes his attacks as crescent-shaped, with the same visual idea appearing in his combat. That description is enough for an overview.

Anime and manga: keeping the timelines separate
Coverage of Kokushibo’s full story is in the manga. Anime adaptation status changes over time, and a secondary explainer written around the 2025 Infinity Castle release describes what had been adapted only as of that writing. Check Shueisha’s official Demon Slayer series information or the official anime channels for current release status before assuming what has been animated.

Where to read and what is on record
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge and published by Shueisha. Shueisha’s official Shonen Jump series page states that the series has surpassed 200 million copies in circulation, including digital editions. The page does not give a publication date for that figure, so treat it as an undated Shueisha statement.
For the complete account of Kokushibo, the manga volumes are the reliable reading option. Check the current edition, availability, and retailer listings before buying, since those change.

No verified verbatim line of dialogue from Kokushibo or from the creator is available for quotation, so this article does not attribute any dialogue to him.
