He is not playing Johnny Storm, the Human Torch: Disney identifies Joseph Quinn as that character. Evans is also not returning as the film’s Captain America in the same sense as Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, who is listed as Captain America alongside Rogers.
Chris Evans is playing Steve Rogers
Disney’s official film page identifies Evans as “Steve Rogers/Captain America.” The official teaser makes the return explicit with the closing card: “Steve Rogers will return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’” Watch the official teaser.
The wording can be confusing because Rogers is the former Captain America, but the film’s lineup also names Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America. In Avengers: Endgame, Rogers passed the shield and mantle to Wilson. So Evans is back as Steve Rogers; Mackie’s Sam Wilson is also Captain America.
He is not the Doomsday Human Torch
Disney lists Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, in Avengers: Doomsday. Evans’s connection to the role comes from elsewhere: he played Johnny Storm in Fox’s Fantastic Four films and later reprised the character in Deadpool & Wolverine. That history helps explain the speculation, but it does not make him the film’s Human Torch.

What the teaser shows—and what it does not confirm
The teaser shows Rogers arriving on a motorcycle, looking at his old Captain America uniform, and holding an infant. It confirms his return, but does not identify the child or explain the full circumstances or plot significance of Rogers’s appearance. Treat theories about the infant or Steve’s post-Endgame life as speculation, not confirmed story details.
Why the role seemed uncertain at first
When TheWrap reported Evans’s involvement in December 2024, the precise nature of his role was still unknown. The later teaser and Disney’s current film page identify him as Steve Rogers, so that earlier uncertainty is no longer the best answer to the question.

At CinemaCon in April 2026, the Associated Press reported footage of Evans returning as Captain America and said Evans would come back only for a good reason, with Doctor Doom being that reason. That is AP’s paraphrase of his remarks, not a verbatim quotation.
