Several The Simpsons characters have died in the show’s continuing storyline, including Bleeding Gums Murphy, Maude Flanders, and Rabbi Hyman Krustofski. Other recurring and minor characters are also listed as deceased, but the answer depends on whether you count implied deaths, temporary stories, or anthology episodes such as Treehouse of Horror. There is no dependable official total.
Which Simpsons characters died in the show?
The clearest examples are characters whose deaths are stated or shown in episodes and remain part of later story continuity. A specialist deceased-character index is useful for finding names, but it is fan-maintained and includes entries with varying levels of prominence and certainty; it is not an official, exhaustive canon register.

Why Maude Flanders’ death stands out
Maude’s death is not just a momentary gag: it changes Ned Flanders’ circumstances and informs his later stories. In “Alone Again, Natura-Diddily,” T-shirt cannons fire at the Springfield Speedway, knocking her from the stands. The episode’s later consequences make her one of the most consequential recurring-character deaths.
Deaths that need qualification
Edna Krabappel
Edna Krabappel was retired from the show, but the reference category that discusses her labels her fictional death as “supposed.” Retirement from a series and a clearly established in-universe death are not the same thing, so she should not be presented as an uncomplicated on-screen death based on that source alone. Voice actors and characters
A real-world death involving a cast member does not, by itself, mean that the character they voiced died in the story. This article is about fictional character fates, not the deaths of actors or other people associated with the production. The reference category distinguishes those subjects. Reference category
Do Treehouse of Horror and imagined deaths count?
Not in the same sense as lasting story continuity. Treehouse of Horror segments, dreams, fantasies, and alternate futures can show characters dying without establishing that fate in the show’s continuing storyline. A list that includes those scenes answers a broader question—who has died in any segment or scenario—rather than which characters remain dead in the main continuity.

Is there a complete list or official death count?
No reliable total is established by the sources cited here. Counts can change depending on whether they include unnamed people, animals, implied deaths, one-off characters, temporary futures, and non-canonical stories. The specialist index is a starting point for names, not proof that every entry has the same status or that the list is complete.
The series continues to air new episodes, so later deaths may add to the picture. An episode appearing on a list as upcoming is not evidence that it has aired; the episode list cited above includes entries through 2026, including future listings.
