Shinichi Izumi is the teenage protagonist of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s original Parasyte manga. A parasite named Migi takes over his right hand, and the two are forced to coexist. Parasyte: The Grey is a new South Korean story set in the same universe, centered on Jeong Su-in and her parasite. It is not a retelling of Shinichi’s story. Shinichi’s appearance in the finale is the link between the two works, and it points back to the original narrative rather than showing that the Korean series follows the manga’s plot.
Who Shinichi Izumi is in the original story
In Iwaaki’s manga, Shinichi is a Japanese teenager who is infected by a parasite. Netflix’s series guide for The Grey describes him as someone who must live alongside that parasite, which is the premise the whole original work is built on.

- Nationality and setting: Japanese, in the manga’s Fukuyama, Hiroshima setting.
- The infection: the parasite, Migi, occupies his right hand rather than replacing his whole body.
- The core dynamic: forced coexistence between a human and a parasite, not a simple hunter-and-prey conflict.
Migi and the forced partnership
Migi is the other half of Shinichi’s story. Because the parasite is limited to his right hand, the relationship is physically intimate in a way most readers will not expect from a monster story. The manga is the source for the full history of how the two learn to live with each other, which is why “Who is Migi?” and “Who is Shinichi Izumi?” are usually asked together.
What Parasyte: The Grey is
The Grey is a new story, not a remake or a continuation of the original plot. Netflix’s February 28, 2024 announcement describes a new locale and fresh characters while keeping the manga’s world and its central message. The Netflix Tudum series guide places the show in Namil, South Korea, and states that the story is original to the series but takes place in the same universe as the manga.
#1 Best Overall
The human-parasite relationship at the center of the Korean series is between Jeong Su-in and Heidi. The series is about how that pairing works in a different country and with different characters, so viewers who expect a Shinichi-led plot will find something structurally separate.
How the finale connects to Shinichi
The finale includes a Shinichi appearance. That cameo is the only direct bridge to the original story, and it is best read as a signal that both works share a world, not as a plot link that changes what happens in The Grey.
Rank #2
Two points about that appearance are not settled:
- The actor: Netflix’s official guide confirms who Shinichi is but does not name the actor in the finale. A Korea Times interview with director Yeon Sang-ho, dated April 10, 2024, reports the appearance, but its identification of the cameo actor differs from later secondary reporting. Until a primary source settles the question, the actor should not be treated as confirmed.
- Future seasons: the same interview reports that Yeon had ideas for a second-season continuation. That is creator framing from April 2024, not confirmation that a second season has been renewed.

What the connection does and does not establish
Netflix’s guide supports the claim that The Grey sits in the same universe as the manga. It does not support a detailed chronology. The sources do not establish where the Korean series falls on a timeline relative to the anime adaptation, or how closely the two share continuity. Readers who want to place The Grey against the anime should treat that as an open question rather than a settled one.
What the creators have said
Iwaaki, speaking in Netflix’s February 28, 2024 announcement, said: “I am most excited that this is ‘a new story’; while I am the author of the original manga, I could also be a member of the audience that experiences thrill and awe.” In the same announcement, he added: “I believe that this ‘new story’ taking place in a different location will lead us into a world beyond my imagination.”

Director Yeon Sang-ho, as quoted in the Netflix Tudum series guide, put the core idea of the original this way: “To me, [the manga] Parasyte is about coexistence.” The bracketed wording is as published.
Netflix’s February 2024 announcement also reports that the manga has sold “over 25 million copies in more than 30 regions and countries.” That is Netflix’s reported figure at the time of the announcement, not a current sales count.

Reading the original manga
Kodansha publishes the original Parasyte manga in print and digital formats, and its catalog page lists eight volumes. For readers who want Shinichi and Migi’s full story rather than the Korean spin-off’s new one, the manga is the direct source. Publisher catalogs change, so confirm the current volume count and formats on Kodansha’s listing before buying.
