In Apple’s listed franchise sequence, it follows Godzilla (2014) and comes before Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). Season 2 premiered in 2026, so its setting year and its release year are two different things.
Where Season 2 sits in the MonsterVerse sequence
Apple’s official series information lists the MonsterVerse films that frame the show’s story: Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Season 2 falls between the 2014 film and the 2019 film in that sequence. Apple’s listing does not assign a separate in-universe date to each film event, so the years attached to the film titles should be read as franchise reference points rather than a complete calendar of events.
The modern-day year for each season
Apple states the modern-day setting for each season directly:
| Season | Modern-day storyline set in | Release |
|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | 2015 | Not restated in the cited Apple materials for this comparison |
| Season 2 | 2017 | Ten episodes, premiered February 27, 2026 |
Season 2’s modern-day story is two years after Season 1’s. That is the cleanest way to place the show against the films: the second season picks up in a year that falls between the 2014 Godzilla and the 2019 King of the Monsters.

Why 2017 is not the year of every scene
The series also contains an earlier-period storyline. Apple’s materials describe the 2017 date as the season’s modern-day thread, not as the setting of every scene. If you are checking a particular flashback or past-set sequence, do not assume it takes place in 2017. The cited Apple sources do not provide a scene-by-scene chronology, so a fan-assembled timeline that claims to place each episode in an exact year is not an official source.
Setting year versus release year
Readers often confuse the two dates because both appear in the same listings. Keep them separate:

What is and is not established
The 2017 setting for Season 2’s modern-day storyline is stated directly by Apple, so it is the most reliable answer to the timeline question. The placement between Godzilla (2014) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) follows from Apple’s listed sequence. Apple’s sources do not establish exact in-universe dates for every film event or every past-set scene, and they should not be read that way.
