As reported in August 2025, Leonardo Notarbartolo had served his sentence and was living with his family near Turin, Italy, where he operated a small wood-pellet business. The available reporting does not independently confirm his whereabouts in October 2026. The three other convicted men—Ferdinando Finotto, Elio D’Onorio, and Pietro Tavano—have no reliably reported current locations in the sources reviewed. Almost all the stolen diamonds remain unaccounted for.
Where are the four convicted Antwerp heist thieves now?
Recent reporting provides a specific post-prison account for Notarbartolo, but not a comparable update for his three co-defendants. These are reported details from 2025, not independently confirmed whereabouts as of October 2026.
Leonardo Notarbartolo
TIME reported on August 8, 2025, that Notarbartolo had served his sentence, lived with his wife in the countryside outside Turin, and ran a small business making wood pellets. In an interview reported by Corriere della Sera on August 12, 2025, Notarbartolo was described as living in Giaveno with his wife and children. These accounts place him in the same general area, but do not establish his present location.
Ferdinando Finotto, Elio D’Onorio, and Pietro Tavano
The Ringer reported that all three were convicted alongside Notarbartolo and imprisoned. The reviewed accounts do not reliably establish where they live now or what they do. There is no sound basis in these reports to infer their current circumstances from the fact that they served prison sentences.

What happened in the 2003 Antwerp Diamond Center heist?
The robbery took place over the weekend of February 15, 2003, at the Antwerp Diamond Center, a building occupied by gem-trading businesses. Investigators developed leads from discarded materials found near a highway, including diamond-related items, a supermarket receipt, and paperwork identifying D’Onorio, according to TIME.

On February 21, Notarbartolo returned to the building and was recognized by security staff, who alerted police. Belgian authorities charged Notarbartolo, Finotto, D’Onorio, and Tavano; after court proceedings and extradition obstacles, all four were convicted and imprisoned.

Was the heist commissioned by an outside partner?
Notarbartolo has claimed that an outside figure named Alessandro commissioned the robbery. TIME reported that authorities interviewed for the documentary found no evidence of a partner by that name. Scott Selby, co-author of Flawless, told TIME: “I don’t think any outside partner commissioned him to do this.” That is Selby’s assessment, not a court finding; the available accounts do not establish the alleged commission as fact.
Why the case still matters to the people affected
The Antwerp Diamond Center housed businesses, not an abstract stockpile. Selby told TIME: “It’s important to remember these real victims. Real people with small businesses were wiped out.” His comment underscores the human cost beyond the unsolved question of where the diamonds went.
