A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place about a century before the events of Game of Thrones. The official descriptions place it in relative terms, not as a dated year, so the precise in-world year is not something the published sources confirm.
How far before Game of Thrones the story is set
Warner Bros. Discovery’s official series description opens with the line “A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros…” That phrasing is the series’ own logline, and it is the most direct statement of the timeline available. Penguin Random House, publisher of the source novellas, is slightly looser. Its description says the collected volume takes place “nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones” and states elsewhere that the story “takes place about a hundred years prior to the events described in A Game of Thrones.”
Read together, the two descriptions agree on the core answer: roughly a hundred years before Game of Thrones, which makes the show a prequel set long before the Stark, Lannister and Targaryen conflicts of the main saga. The gap between “a century,” “nearly a century” and “about a hundred years” is rounding, not a disagreement about the date.
What the official sources say, side by side
| Source | Wording on timing | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom, series synopsis | “A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’” | Approximately 100 years before Game of Thrones | An exact in-world year; the publication date of the synopsis is not shown in the accessible copy |
| Penguin Random House Higher Education, HBO tie-in edition of the collected novellas | “nearly a century before” and “about a hundred years prior” | Approximately 100 years before Game of Thrones, with the same rounded framing | An exact in-world year or the interval relative to House of the Dragon |
| Apple TV, United States listing | Lists 2026 as the series release year | The real-world release year of the show | Any fictional date; 2026 is not the in-story year |
Each of these sources describes the timeline in relative terms. None of them names a calendar year for the story’s events.

The story’s place in the Westeros timeline
The series follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight nicknamed Dunk, and his young squire Egg. The first season begins as Dunk travels toward a jousting tournament at Ashford. The publisher’s description places the story in an era when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, so the setting is the Targaryen dynasty’s rule, not the later period of contested succession that Game of Thrones covers.
That placement matters for viewers who know the main saga. Characters and places from later seasons may appear in a different political order here, and the show is not a sequel to Game of Thrones. It is a standalone story about two minor figures, set in a much earlier stretch of Westerosi history. The Apple TV listing describes the first season as six episodes centered on Dunk’s Ashford tournament story.

Why no exact year is given
Some fan sites and secondary search results cite 209 AC as the story’s year. The official series descriptions and the publisher’s text do not confirm that date, and we have not treated it as established. If you need a precise anchor, the safe position is the one the official material takes: about a century before Game of Thrones.
The same caution applies to the distance from House of the Dragon. The sources reviewed for this piece do not give an exact interval between the two shows’ settings, so any specific number of years between them would be an inference rather than a published fact.

Reading the source novellas for context
Penguin Random House publishes the three official Dunk and Egg prequel novellas as a single collected volume, sold as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The publisher lists an HBO tie-in paperback released in 2026, alongside earlier paperback, hardcover and ebook editions. Reading the novellas is optional. They cover the same two characters and the same era, so they can give useful background on the timeline, but the show does not require them.
If you are trying to place the story against the rest of the saga, the practical order is simple: start with the series or the collected novellas, then return to Game of Thrones to see how the Targaryen era the show depicts sets up later events.

What to remember
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set about a century before Game of Thrones.
- The official descriptions give a relative placement, not a confirmed in-world year.
- The story is set during Targaryen rule and centers on Dunk and Egg, beginning with the Ashford tournament.
- The 2026 date is the real-world release year, not the story’s date.
In short: the story takes place roughly a hundred years before Game of Thrones, and that approximate placement is the answer the official sources support.
