Who is Sofia Falcone?
Sofia is a member of Gotham’s Falcone crime family and Carmine Falcone’s daughter. In Dark Victory, she is revealed as the Hangman, the killer whose identity Batman and his allies are trying to uncover.

That distinction matters: Sofia is not the Holiday killer. The two identities belong to different mysteries in two sequential Batman stories.
What is the Hangman mystery?
Batman: The Long Halloween: Dark Victory is the sequel to The Long Halloween and centers on the search for the Hangman. Penguin Random House’s publisher description says, “A children’s game pinned to each of the victims is the only clue to the Hangman’s identity.” The clue is part of the mystery that drives the sequel.

How is the Hangman story different from The Long Halloween?
The Long Halloween follows Batman, district attorney Harvey Dent, and Lieutenant James Gordon as they investigate a killer who strikes on holidays. Its story also traces Dent’s transformation into Two-Face. The book provides the prior context for Dark Victory, but its holiday-based murder mystery is not the Hangman case.
| Book | Story role | Central mystery |
|---|---|---|
| Batman: The Long Halloween | First in the sequence; establishes the earlier Gotham crime story | The identity of the Holiday killer |
| Batman: The Long Halloween: Dark Victory | Sequel | The identity of the Hangman |
What order should you read the comics in?
- Read Batman: The Long Halloween first. It sets up the earlier story and the Batman, Gordon, and Dent context that leads into the sequel. DC lists Jeph Loeb as writer and Tim Sale as artist and colorist; its graphic-novel listing gives a page count of 368 and an on-sale date of December 18, 2002. Those are details of that listing, not the original serial publication date. See DC’s listing for The Long Halloween.
- Then read Batman: The Long Halloween: Dark Victory: The Deluxe Edition. This collected edition gathers Batman: Dark Victory #1–13 and contains the Hangman mystery. See Penguin Random House’s listing for the Deluxe Edition.
The publisher pages identify these editions but do not establish their current price or availability.
