In an Entertainment Tonight interview with Kevin Frazier, she began by talking about filming the fifth season of Hacks, then said the state of the United States was overshadowing that conversation. She called the country “at a turning point,” urged people to “keep their heads,” and said speaking up in this moment would take courage. Later, while accepting the Golden Globe for Best Female Actor – Television – Musical/Comedy, she referred back to it as her “rant” and said she would not repeat it.
What Smart said on the red carpet
The exchange started with an ordinary question. Frazier asked about shooting the upcoming fifth season of Hacks, and Smart answered that the work was going well. She then said that the country’s current situation had taken over the usual entertainment talk. TV Insider’s report of the interview, dated January 11, 2026, quotes two passages that carry the core of the comment:
“I know that there are people who find it annoying when actors take opportunities like this to talk about social and political things, but I’m not here right now speaking as an actor. I’m here speaking as a citizen and a mom, and I hope people understand that.”
“I feel like we’re kind of at a turning point in this country, and I hope people can keep their heads because that’s actually, really the hardest thing, I think, is to keep our heads.”

The first passage matters for how the remark should be read. Smart anticipated criticism that actors should not use red-carpet time for politics, and she framed her view as that of a citizen and a parent rather than one that carried extra weight because she is famous. TV Insider also reports that, after an interruption, she continued by saying she found it concerning that “certain entities” might want people to fight back.
Why the word “rant” is her own
The headline term does not come from the interviewer or a critic. It is Smart’s description of her own remarks, and it appears in her acceptance speech. Readers searching for a dramatic outburst will not find one in the transcripts: the comment was measured, general in its concerns, and delivered in conversational language. TIME’s recap of the ceremony records that she used the word when accepting the award and that the remarks concerned her worries about the direction of the country.

What the comment did not contain
The reported remarks do not name a specific policy, law, or political figure, and they do not include a list of demands. Smart spoke about tone and civic responsibility: the difficulty of staying calm, the importance of people speaking up when they feel strongly, and the view that most people already know what the right course is. Anyone looking for a concrete policy position will not find one in these sources.
The separate Variety interview
TV Insider also reports comments Smart made in a different carpet interview, with Variety. As TV Insider paraphrases them, she said she was not as optimistic about the world, described the current moment as a reckoning, and encouraged people who feel strongly about something to speak up when they have the chance. These comments come from a separate conversation and should not be treated as part of the Entertainment Tonight exchange.

The award count is background only and says nothing about the reach or effect of the red-carpet remarks, on which no measured figure is available.
