The BBC has not cancelled Doctor Who. On 10 June 2026 it dropped the one-off Christmas 2026 special it had announced in October 2025, and said the series itself would go out to competitive tender as part of planning its long-term future. As of 8 October 2026, the official statements available do not name a production company or give a return date for the main series.
What happened, in order
- 28 October 2025: The BBC announced that Doctor Who would return at Christmas 2026 with a special written by Russell T Davies. The same statement said Disney+ would not partner on the next season and that the BBC remained committed to the show. The statement was attributed to Lindsay Salt, the BBC’s Director of Drama, who said: “We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”
- 10 June 2026: In its official update, the BBC said that it, Davies and Bad Wolf had decided not to proceed with the Christmas episode. Its stated rationale was to focus on securing the show’s long-term future rather than use a one-off episode to bridge the gap. The same update said Doctor Who would go to competitive tender that year.
- 11 June 2026: The Associated Press reported that Davies had confirmed his exit. According to that report, the proposed Christmas episode had not been written and no actor had been approached to play the Doctor.
Two different things: the special and the series
Most of the confusion comes from treating these as one decision. The table separates the two, using only what the official material states.
| Item | Status as of 8 October 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas 2026 special | Cancelled. Not proceeding. | BBC update, 10 June 2026 |
| Future of the main TV series | Going to competitive tender; no winning bidder named | BBC update, 10 June 2026 |
| Main series next transmission date | Not stated in the cited official material | BBC update, 10 June 2026 |
| Davies’s role | Confirmed exit, as reported | Associated Press, 11 June 2026 |
| CBeebies Doctor Who animation | Stated by the BBC to be in production; no air date given in the cited material | BBC update, 10 June 2026 |
The BBC framed the tender as a continued commitment to the show. Headlines that say “Doctor Who cancelled” collapse the one-off special and the series into a single decision, and the official wording does not support that.
What “competitive tender” means here
A tender is an invitation for production companies to bid for the next phase of the series. The BBC said it would run one, and that the process was intended to secure the show’s future. The official update did not say who will make the next episodes, when they will be made, or when they will air. It said bidding details would follow “in due course”, and no later official update that names a result is included in the material available as of 8 October 2026.
#1 Best Overall
The BBC’s June 2026 statement put it this way: “Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come.”
Why the special was dropped, and what is not known
The BBC’s stated reason was strategic: it wanted to focus on the show’s long-term future rather than use a single episode to bridge the gap before that future was settled. That is the BBC’s own explanation. The official material does not give a budget, audience, production-cost or ratings figure connected to the decision, and it does not explain Disney+’s decision not to partner on the next season beyond the October 2025 statement that it would not.

Other Doctor Who work that continues
Several parts of the franchise are separate from the main televised series and are not evidence of a return date for it:
- CBeebies animation: The BBC said its previously announced Doctor Who animation for CBeebies was in production. No broadcast date is given in the cited official material.
- BBC Studios: The BBC said BBC Studios would continue global distribution, licensing and consumer products on its behalf.
- Big Finish audio dramas: A BBC Studios 2026 statement says Big Finish’s licence to produce Doctor Who audio dramas has been renewed through the end of 2035. The licence covers audio, not the television series, and it is sold in digital-download and collector-edition formats.
What to watch for next
Three things would change the picture: a named tender outcome or production partner, a transmission window for the next series, or a formal BBC announcement that the series is ending. None of these had been announced in the official material available as of 8 October 2026. Until one appears, the accurate summary is that the 2026 Christmas special is cancelled, the main series is subject to a tender, and its next episodes are unscheduled.
