DC announced Paradise Lost as a live-action series about the island’s society and politics, set before Diana’s birth. The announcement outlines a premise, not a finished plot or a confirmed release plan.
What is Themyscira?
DC’s official Wonder Woman profile describes Themyscira as a hidden island also known as Paradise Island. Diana is an Amazon, and DC identifies her as the island’s emissary to the outside world. DC Studios likewise calls Themyscira the Amazons’ home and Wonder Woman’s birthplace in its January 31, 2023 announcement.
DC’s profile lists All-Star Comics #8 (1941) as Wonder Woman’s first appearance. That is a useful starting point for her publication history, but it does not establish further details about Themyscira or the planned series.
What is Paradise Lost about?
DC announced Paradise Lost as a live-action HBO Max series centered on Themyscira. Peter Safran described it as a story of political intrigue and the society of women who live there. James Gunn characterized it as an origin story about how that society came about, including its politics, rules and leadership. Safran said the events occur before Diana’s birth.

Those comments establish the announced direction, not a complete synopsis. They point to a society-focused political drama rather than a story following Diana as Wonder Woman. In DC’s announcement, Gunn asked what the Amazons’ politics and rules are and who holds power; the announcement does not provide the answers as settled plot details.
Does the series take place before Wonder Woman?
According to Safran’s January 2023 description, the story takes place before Diana is born. That places the announced premise earlier than Diana’s life as Wonder Woman, but the announcement does not give a more precise timeline or explain how the series will connect to other DC stories.

Is the Paradise Lost comic the source for the series?
DC Universe Infinite lists a collected comic titled Wonder Woman: Paradise Lost (2023 Edition). Its story is different from the series premise: evil gods transform Gotham City to resemble ancient Greece. DC’s listing presents the collection as reading for fans excited about the television series, but it does not say the show adapts the comic.
| Planned TV series | 2023 comic collection | |
|---|---|---|
| Medium | Live-action HBO Max series, announced in 2023 | Collected comic, listed by DC Universe Infinite |
| Story focus | Amazon society and its politics, before Diana’s birth | Gotham City transformed by evil gods to resemble ancient Greece |
| What is established | An announced premise; not a completed synopsis | The listing says it collects Wonder Woman #164–170 and a story from Wonder Woman Secret Files #2 |
The comic listing gives the collection a release date of May 9, 2023, and a length of 169 pages. It is optional companion reading, not confirmed source material or a required tie-in to the series.

DC’s January 2023 announcement said the slate’s projects were in development and could change. It does not confirm a finished story, cast, showrunner, episode count, release date or current production stage. The announcement therefore supports describing Paradise Lost as a planned series with an announced premise; it does not establish a current release window or production status.
