Cast Away’s famous island was filmed on Monuriki, a small uninhabited island in Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands. The rest of the 2000 production was shot in Moscow, in the Los Angeles area (including Culver City), in Memphis, Tennessee, and in Canadian, Texas, a town in the Texas Panhandle.
Monuriki, Fiji: the island in the story
The island where Chuck Noland spends most of the film is Monuriki, in the Mamanuca group off Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu. The AFI Catalog’s production account describes the filmmakers moving to the uninhabited volcanic island, which it gives as roughly 99 acres. The catalog does not give a publication year for that size figure, so treat it as an approximate description rather than a dated measurement. Tourism Fiji also identifies Monuriki as the island where the movie was filmed and promotes the connection to visitors.

The production’s agreement with the island’s owners
According to the AFI Catalog’s account, the production held a formal ceremony with the island’s Fijian owners and agreed to an environmental code of conduct. The code required that each tree removed be replaced with three trees, and it committed the production to providing food and plants for the indigenous crested iguana. These terms describe the 1999–2000 shoot. They are not a current visitor rulebook, and they should not be read as the rules that apply to anyone landing on the island today.
The fictional island and the real one
The film’s dialogue places Chuck’s island to the south of the Cook Islands, a position that does not match Monuriki’s real location in Fiji. The setting is fictional, and the filmed island is a real place chosen to stand in for it. If you are looking for the island that appears on screen, Monuriki is the answer. The story’s coordinates are not a guide to where the film was shot.

Canadian, Texas and the crossroads
The AFI Catalog confirms that the production finished in Canadian, Texas. IMDb’s location listing, which is community-maintained, associates Arrington Ranch House Lodge with Bettina Peterson’s ranch house. IMDb also lists the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 48 and 1268 near Mobeetie as a crossroads used in the film. Treat both IMDb attributions as contributor claims. They are useful leads, but they are not confirmed by the official catalog, and you should verify them before relying on them.
How the production unfolded
The AFI Catalog and Tourism Fiji together give the following sequence. Tourism Fiji gives the overall span of production as January 1999 to May 2000.

Visiting Monuriki: what is and isn’t established
Monuriki is a real, named island that the film made famous, and visitors do ask about it. However, the sources reviewed for this article did not establish current landing permissions, boat transport schedules, or tour availability for the island. Do not assume unrestricted access. Before planning a trip, check current guidance from Tourism Fiji and the operators who serve the Mamanuca Islands, and confirm that any trip actually lands on Monuriki rather than a neighboring island.
The filming details listed above reflect the production’s own account from the late 1990s and early 2000s. They are a record of what happened on set, not a description of the island as it is today.

The AFI Catalog and production notes are the strongest sources for the filming sequence. Address-level details and scene mappings from community-maintained listings should be checked against other records before you rely on them.
Cast Away is a practical case for film location research: the most reliable answers come from production records and the official catalog, and community listings add useful leads that still need verification.

- Cast Away - Widescreen Blu-ray Edition
Where the film’s own dialogue, a catalog description, and a community listing disagree, the production record should win. That is the standard applied throughout this guide.
The result is a clear answer for the main question: the island is Monuriki in Fiji, and the rest of the film was shot across Moscow, Los Angeles and Culver City, Memphis and Canadian, Texas.
