Pikachu’s red cheek patches are called electric sacs. Pokémon’s official U.S. Pokédex describes them as small electric sacs on both cheeks, and it says Pikachu can discharge electricity from them when it is in a tough spot. The sacs are a fictional feature of Pokémon lore, not a real animal anatomy term.
The official term: electric sacs
The most direct answer comes from the Pokédex entry for Pikachu on Pokémon’s official U.S. site, which uses the phrase “small electric sacs on both its cheeks.” That is the wording to use if you need a single name. Pokémon’s official page for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! describes partner Pikachu as having “red electric sacs” on its cheeks, which confirms the same feature with a color added.
The alternate phrase: cheek pouches
The official creator profile “The Creators of Pikachu,” published by The Pokémon Company International around 2018 (the exact date was not confirmed in the source), uses a different phrase. Character designer Atsuko Nishida, credited on the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green games, says: “The cheek pouches I was so particular about when I was creating the design.”
“Cheek pouches” is therefore a legitimate design term used by the people who made Pikachu, but it is a lore description rather than a formal anatomical label. If you are writing or searching for a precise name, “electric sacs” is the safer choice, with “cheek pouches” noted as the creators’ alternate wording.

Where the idea came from
In the same interview, Nishida explains the inspiration for the feature: “It was here that I was inspired to make Pikachu store electricity in its cheek pouches.” She was describing her interest in squirrels, which store food in their cheeks. The electric sacs therefore borrow a familiar animal behavior and turn it into a battery-like organ for electricity.
What the sacs do in the lore
According to the Pokédex, Pikachu can discharge electricity from its sacs when it is in a tough spot. The red circles on the outside of its cheeks mark where those sacs are, and they are part of the character’s visual identity across the games, anime, and merchandise. The entry also notes that when many Pikachu gather, their stored electricity can build up and cause lightning storms. That detail is fictional lore and does not change the name of the feature.
