Netflix’s 2024 documentary Martha, directed by R.J. Cutler, presents Martha Stewart’s life as a rise, a public fall and a comeback. Its most useful argument is that Stewart turned expertise, taste and a personal public persona into a recognizable business and media identity before social platforms existed. The film is a streaming documentary on Netflix; this article does not verify a physical release. Read it as a portrait assembled from Stewart’s own account, other people’s testimony and archival material, and check its account of the legal controversy against records.

What the film covers

Netflix’s official description identifies Martha as a 2024 documentary directed by R.J. Cutler. It combines intimate interviews with Stewart and members of her circle, and it organizes her story around three phases: rise, fall and comeback. The film follows her career from its early stages through the public scrutiny that followed her legal troubles, and it closes on her later reinvention.

Critical reviews read the film as connecting Stewart’s childhood and work to larger themes: domestic labor, ambition, gender expectations and the intense media attention around her 2004 trial. Those readings are interpretations of the documentary. They are useful for understanding the film’s argument, but they are not independent evidence about Stewart’s life.

The “original influencer” framing

The film’s central label is Netflix’s own phrase. Calling Stewart an “original influencer” argues that she built a media and business identity around expertise, taste and her persona, and that she did so before social platforms made personal brands a common route to an audience. The framing is persuasive because it lets viewers see her homekeeping empire as an early version of the creator economy.

It is still a framing, not a settled historical designation. Other media figures, earlier magazine and television personalities among them, could make competing claims about who came first, and the film’s label does not settle that question. Treat “original influencer” as the documentary’s argument, and judge it against the evidence the film presents.

What Stewart says about influence

In an interview published by Netflix Tudum on November 1, 2024, Stewart reflects on how today’s social platforms let creators reach audiences at a scale unavailable to earlier media personalities. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to commit to a good idea and to find like-minded collaborators.

These points are paraphrased here and attributed to Stewart. For exact wording, read the original Tudum interview before quoting her directly. Her comments add a first-person perspective to the film’s label: she describes the change in media reach, but the claim that she was the original influencer remains Netflix’s framing.

Who speaks on camera, and who does not

Netflix Tudum’s background material states that Stewart is the only interview subject shown on camera. Other people contribute to her story without appearing on screen. That distinction matters. An off-camera voice can shape the narrative as much as an on-camera interview, but the audience cannot see the speaker or judge their delivery, and the film’s editing decides how their testimony is framed.

Source type How it appears in the film How to weigh it
Martha Stewart On-camera interview, the only on-camera interview subject A first-person account. It is authoritative about her own perspective and motives, but it is shaped by her interest in how her story is told.
Members of her circle Off-camera contributions, conveyed through the film Useful for personal context. Check what each person could have known first-hand, and whether the film makes clear who is speaking.
Archival material Earlier footage and material from her career Shows what was public at the time. Confirm the date and context, because edited archives can support a narrative as easily as they can document it.
Critical reviews Outside commentary on the film Interpretation of the documentary’s themes, not evidence about Stewart’s life.
Court records and independent reporting Not the film’s own material The standard for checking legal claims. Use them for the trial and its aftermath.

How to read the scandal and reinvention

The film’s most persuasive stretch is its account of Stewart’s fall and comeback. It is also where a viewer most needs to separate the film’s story from the record. A practical approach:

  1. Separate narrative from documented fact. Note which statements are interview claims, which are archival footage, and which are the filmmakers’ own framing, such as the rise-fall-comeback structure.
  2. Identify who vouches for each personal detail. If a detail about her childhood, marriage or family is presented without a named source, treat it as the film’s account until another source confirms it.
  3. Compare the reviews’ readings with the film itself. Reviewers may emphasize gender, class or labor themes differently. Check whether a claimed theme appears in the footage or only in the critic’s summary.
  4. Check the trial against primary records. Court filings and contemporaneous independent reporting are the reference points for what was charged, argued and decided. Do not rely on the documentary’s edit for those facts.

What remains unestablished

This article does not provide an independent timeline of the ImClone investigation, the 2004 trial or Stewart’s prison sentence. The film’s account of those events, and its personal-history details, should be read as the documentary’s own account or as the account of a named reviewer until checked against primary records.

  • No comprehensive critical consensus on the film has been established. The reviews cited here are useful lenses, not a survey of opinion.
  • Stewart’s response to the finished film is not covered here, because a direct statement from her has not been checked for this article.
  • The film’s value lies in how it frames Stewart’s rise, scandal and reinvention. Its “original influencer” label is a persuasive argument worth testing, not a verified historical ranking.

Watched with those limits in mind, Martha is most useful as a portrait of how a public persona was built and rebuilt, and as a starting point for checking the claims it makes about the trial.
