Saiyans are fictional extraterrestrials in Dragon Ball, not a type of real monkey or ape. Their tails and Great Ape (Oozaru) transformation give them monkey-like traits, but the story’s creator interviews cited here do not identify them with any particular Earth primate.
Why Saiyans look monkey-like
The resemblance comes from two story features: Saiyans can have tails, and some transform into a Great Ape, also called an Oozaru. “Great Ape” names a fictional transformation; it does not establish that Saiyans belong to the zoological group of apes. Nor does the available evidence connect them to gorillas, baboons, or another specific primate.
What Akira Toriyama said about Goku’s design
In an interview transcript hosted by the fan archive Tsoj, Toriyama reportedly said that when he gave Goku a tail, he was thinking of him as a big monkey and had not yet planned for Goku to be an alien. The transcript is associated with Complete Illustrations Book #4: read the archived interview transcript.
This is evidence about an early design idea for Goku, not a biological origin story for every Saiyan. The transcript is an archive translation, rather than an official Dragon Ball publisher page, so its wording should be treated as an attributed account rather than a verified official quotation.

The Journey to the West connection
A separate Tsoj archive transcript says Toriyama wanted to make a “modern Saiyuuki”—a reference to Journey to the West—and connects that inspiration to giving Goku a tail. The interview is associated with Complete Illustrations Book #2: read the archived interview transcript.
This helps explain a literary and visual influence on Dragon Ball and Goku’s design. It does not mean Saiyans are a real monkey species, or that all Saiyans share a documented descent from one.

So, are Saiyans monkeys or apes?
Neither in the zoological sense. “Saiyan” refers to a fictional people in Dragon Ball. “Monkey-like” describes features of their fictional design, while “Great Ape” refers to a transformation. The available sources do not establish a one-to-one match with any real-world monkey or ape.
