After his 1995 criminal acquittal, O.J. Simpson’s life was marked by a separate civil judgment, years of efforts to collect damages, and a later Nevada conviction that sent him to prison. He was released on parole in 2017, lived in Las Vegas, completed parole in 2021, and died in 2024 at age 76.

How the criminal trial and civil case differed

In 1995, Simpson was acquitted of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in a criminal trial. Two years later, a civil jury found him liable for their deaths and ordered him to pay the Brown and Goldman families $33.5 million. These were separate proceedings with different legal outcomes: the 1997 civil finding was not a criminal conviction. The Associated Press reported on the judgment and its aftermath; ABC News also reported the civil award.

What happened to the civil judgment?

The $33.5 million was the amount ordered, not a confirmed total of money collected. The Goldman family continued pursuing the judgment. The Associated Press reported that the family obtained some of Simpson’s memorabilia, movie rights, and rights to a book he wrote about the killings toward satisfying part of the award. The AP’s account describes those collection efforts.

Why Simpson went to prison in Nevada

In 2007, Simpson led a group into a Las Vegas hotel room during a confrontation with sports memorabilia dealers over property he said belonged to him. He was convicted in 2008 in the separate Las Vegas robbery and kidnapping case and sentenced to as many as 33 years. The case was unrelated to the California murder trial. Simpson served nine years before being granted parole. The AP reported on his release and the Nevada conviction.

Where he lived after prison

Simpson left prison on October 1, 2017, and remained in Las Vegas. Accounts described him living in a gated community, playing golf, and commenting on sports through social media. In a 2019 interview with the Associated Press, he characterized his life there as “fine.” He also said, “We don’t need to go back and relive the worst day of our lives,” explaining why he did not want to revisit the killings publicly. These were his own descriptions of his life and choices at the time, not a comprehensive account of his private life. The Associated Press quoted him in 2019; The Washington Post repeated his “Life is fine” remark.
