She said she told them she was well and getting stronger. In a later interview, William described a broader approach: being open about good and bad news, explaining difficult events and feelings, and talking honestly even when they did not have every answer.
What Catherine said she told George, Charlotte and Louis
In a video statement on March 22, 2024, Catherine said the couple had needed time to explain her diagnosis to their children in a way suited to them. She said they reassured the children that she would be okay. Catherine added: “As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.” The Associated Press transcript of her statement records her account directly.
Catherine said the diagnosis followed major abdominal surgery in January 2024. Tests after the operation found cancer had been present, and her medical team advised preventative chemotherapy. She did not identify the cancer type in the statement. The public account describes the reassurance she said she gave the children, not the medical details discussed with them.
How William later described their approach
In an interview with Brazilian television host Luciano Huck during a visit to Brazil, published in November 2025, William said he and Catherine chose to tell their children everything, including good and bad news. He said they explained why things happen and why the children might feel upset. He also acknowledged that questions can arise without answers, adding that they chose to talk about everything. TV Globo’s gshow report identifies the conversation as an exclusive interview for Domingão com Huck; The Independent published English-language quotations.

William’s comments describe a family approach to difficult conversations, rather than an itemized account of what the children were told about Catherine’s diagnosis. In an English-language account of the interview, ABC News also reported William saying they communicate more with their children and that hiding things from them often does not work. The report presents that excerpt with an ellipsis, so it should not be read as a single uninterrupted quotation. ABC News’ Good Morning America account provides that context.

The two statements offer different but compatible details: Catherine shared the specific reassurance she said she gave the children, while William later outlined the couple’s broader preference for openness and explanation. Neither public account gives the exact private wording used with each child, what medical details were shared, or how George, Charlotte and Louis individually responded. William’s use of “everything” should therefore be understood as a description of their general approach, not proof that every clinical detail was discussed.
The children were reported as 12, 10 and 7, respectively, when William’s interview was reported in November 2025; those are ages at that time, not current ages. The interview also addressed King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis, but the public remarks do not disclose the children’s detailed understanding of either illness.
