Being on HGTV’s Home Town meant months of selection interviews for one Season 4 homeowner, followed by handing design decisions to Ben and Erin Napier’s team, enduring long filming days with retakes, and paying for both the house and its renovation. Rhonda Phillips described that experience in a 2020 interview; it is a firsthand account, not a current casting guide or a guarantee of how every participant’s experience works.
How did one homeowner get chosen?
Rhonda Phillips, a Season 4 participant, told Realtor.com that she contacted HGTV and went through a selection process lasting several months. She recalled phone interviews, a written essay, and questionnaires about her design preferences. In her essay, she explained her wish to reconnect with her Mississippi roots and Laurel.
Those were the steps Phillips encountered for her season. They do not establish HGTV’s current application requirements, eligibility rules, or when casting is open. For current information, check HGTV’s official Home Town page rather than treating a 2020 account as an active application process.
How much design control did the homeowners have?
Phillips said that after contracts were signed, she and her husband shared their preferences and interests with the team. The Napiers handled the design, and she trusted them to interpret what the couple wanted. In her case, she did not see the selected house again until the reveal; she described the process as a leap of faith.

Her account suggests participants can communicate what matters to them while giving the renovation team substantial latitude. It does not specify what the contract allowed or establish how much control other homeowners retain.
What was filming like?
Phillips said she had not expected the amount of work required to capture scenes. She recalled retakes when background noise or lighting caused problems, scenes that took hours, and long filming days. Her interview does not give a standard number of filming days or a typical schedule, so those details should not be assumed for every episode.

Who pays for the house and renovation?
In Phillips’s account, homeowners paid for both the property and the renovations. Her four-bedroom, two-bathroom 1920 Craftsman was listed for $65,000, and the reported estimated total with renovations was $165,000, within the couple’s stated $185,000 budget. Those are figures for her particular project, reported in 2020—not current price guidance or a promise about another participant’s costs. Realtor.com reported that the Napiers kept the project affordable in part by doing much of the work themselves.
Was the reveal really a surprise?
Phillips said she was nervous seeing the finished home for the first time and that the surprise was real. She and her husband were delighted with the result, which exceeded her expectations in some ways. That describes her reaction, not a guaranteed outcome for every homeowner.

Realtor.com also reported that the show traditionally held a gathering for participants from a season, but the Season 4 event was delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic. That report describes the situation at the time, not a current promise about participant events.
