.exe horror is an informal online horror trope in which a computer game or executable is presented as haunted, cursed, or corrupted. Its best-known example is Sonic.exe, a creepypasta about a malevolent version of Sonic appearing inside a game. The phrase describes a style of fan horror, not a formally standardized genre.
What does “.exe” mean in .exe horror?
“EXE” refers to an executable file: a file associated with launching a program. In the Sonic.exe story, that computer-file framing is made literal: the narrator receives a disc marked “SONIC.EXE” and starts the game. The extension helps make the horror feel as if it could be opened and encountered on a computer, rather than only read about.
That is a fictional setup, not evidence that executable files are haunted or behave like the story describes. The cited sources establish a horror premise, not a real software-safety claim.
How does the trope create horror?
It takes something familiar—a recognizable game character or world—and makes it uncanny or threatening. In Sonic.exe, Sonic is presented as the malevolent presence, turning a familiar game into the source of danger. Other works may use different characters, settings, or scares; the phrase does not guarantee a fixed formula.

What is Sonic.exe: a story or a game?
It is both a creepypasta and the basis for fan-made game adaptations, which are related but distinct forms. Dictionary.com describes Sonic.exe as an online horror story about an evil version of Sonic the Hedgehog. It reports that JC-the-Hyena submitted the story to the Creepypasta Wiki in August 2011 and that a game adaptation credited to MY5TCrimson appeared in August 2012. Those dates are reported by Dictionary.com’s entry, dated March 1, 2018; they are not independently verified here.
The Creepypasta.com story page, dated September 3, 2013, presents the computer disc and frightening changes inside the game as fiction. A written creepypasta can supply the premise, while a fan game can adapt it into something a player interacts with.
