Spoilers for The Last of Us Part II. No—Ellie does not kill Abby. During their final confrontation on the Santa Barbara coast, Ellie stops fighting and lets Abby and Lev go. Abby survives, but what happens to either of them afterward is left unresolved.
What happens to Abby in the final confrontation?
After the theater confrontation, time passes. Abby and Lev travel to Santa Barbara looking for signs of the Fireflies, but the Rattlers capture them. Ellie, living with Dina and JJ at a farmhouse, remains haunted by Joel’s death. When Tommy tells her where Abby may be, Ellie leaves for Santa Barbara. GameSpot’s ending recap describes these events.
Ellie finds Abby and Lev bound to posts on the coast. She frees them, then insists Abby fight her and threatens Lev to force Abby to comply. During the fight, Abby bites off two of Ellie’s fingers. Ellie gets the upper hand, but stops before killing Abby and lets both of them leave.
Why does Ellie let Abby go?
The game does not give one definitive explanation for Ellie’s decision. In Naughty Dog’s official podcast, co-writer and game director Neil Druckmann says the reason is “open to interpretation.” He describes the choice this way: “she doesn’t kill Abby. And in not killing her, she saves her humanity.”

Ellie’s actor, Ashley Johnson, offers a compatible reading: killing Abby would not necessarily heal the pain of losing Joel. The final flashback between Ellie and Joel adds context. Before his death, Ellie had started trying to forgive him and repair their relationship. GameSpot reads Ellie’s revenge as bound up with grief, trauma, purpose, and the lost chance to reconcile; that is an interpretation of the story, not a definitive explanation supplied by the game.
What happens to Abby and Lev afterward?
Abby and Lev survive the Rattlers’ captivity and leave by boat. The game’s post-game title screen shows a brighter shore and a casino-like building associated with Catalina. On the official podcast, Druckmann identifies the location as Catalina and says the image suggests Abby and Lev may have made it there. Co-writer Halley Gross describes the image as hopeful while emphasizing its mystery. The game does not confirm whether they reach the Fireflies or what their lives become.

Where does Ellie go at the end?
Ellie returns to the farmhouse and finds Dina and JJ gone. She tries to play Joel’s guitar, but her injured hand prevents her from playing as before. She leaves the farmhouse alone. The game does not say where she goes next.
