In Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Emily escapes Gilead for Canada and later reunites with June. Margaret Atwood’s novel tells a different, much shorter story: Ofglen disappears, and June hears that she killed herself, though the novel never confirms the report.
Who is Emily, and why is she called Ofglen?
Alexis Bledel plays Emily Malek in the television adaptation. When June first encounters her in Gilead, Emily is known by the Handmaid name Ofglen and is assigned as June’s shopping partner. Bledel described Ofglen as someone already established in Gilead when June arrives, and said the two women become friends. Channel 4 Press interviewed Bledel about the character in 2017.
What happens to Emily in the TV series?
The series expands Emily’s story beyond her introduction as June’s fellow Handmaid. It reveals more of her life and connection to resistance, alongside the brutal punishments Gilead uses to control her.
She escapes to Canada
In Season 4, Emily escapes Gilead with help from Commander Lawrence. In Canada, she helps rehouse children left parentless by Gilead, according to TheWrap’s account of her arc.

She reunites with June
Emily encounters June in Boston in Season 6, Episode 10, and the two embrace. The episode report, published May 27, 2025, establishes their reunion; it does not provide a further account of what Emily does afterward. Her reunion with June is therefore a significant on-screen return, not a complete resolution of her later life.
What happens to Ofglen in the novel?
Do not read the television storyline back into Atwood’s novel. The novel’s Ofglen disappears after the resistance is exposed. June later hears from another Handmaid that Ofglen killed herself rather than be captured, but that is a report within the story, not a directly confirmed death.

| Question | Atwood’s novel | Hulu series |
|---|---|---|
| What is she called? | Ofglen, the Handmaid name June knows. | Emily Malek; she is first introduced to June as Ofglen. |
| What is established about her fate? | She disappears. June hears that she killed herself, but the report is not confirmed. | She survives Gilead, escapes to Canada in Season 4, and reunites with June in Season 6, Episode 10. |
| Where does the account leave her? | With an unresolved disappearance. | With a reunion in Boston; the cited episode report does not establish what follows. |
The contrast reflects the series’ broader narrative scope: it turns the novel’s brief, uncertain account of Ofglen into a recurring character arc involving resistance, punishment, escape, and reunion. The series is adapted from Atwood’s novel, but the two versions do not give Emily/Ofglen the same story. Hulu’s official series page identifies the adaptation’s source novel.
