Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger worked comfortably together on 10 Things I Hate About You, and Stiles later remembered him as kind and supportive. Their castmates also recalled a close, sociable group during filming. Those accounts document warm professional rapport—not a confirmed off-screen romance.
What did Julia Stiles say about working with Heath Ledger?
In a January 17, 2025 interview with Vogue, Stiles recalled Ledger as “such a bright light” and an “energetic, kind force.” She described him as magnetic and charismatic and said she was grateful for his kindness.
Stiles explained why that mattered: 10 Things I Hate About You was her first time leading a major studio movie, and romantic scenes required her to feel comfortable with the person acting opposite her. She said Ledger helped her feel that comfort. Her account is about a supportive working relationship; she did not say they were dating.
Did Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger date in real life?
The interviews cited here do not confirm that Stiles and Ledger dated. They describe professional warmth and a friendly cast, but do not establish the actors’ private relationship beyond those recollections. The film’s romantic pairing and the chemistry audiences see on screen are not evidence of an off-screen romance.

What did the cast remember about filming?
In a 2019 Entertainment Tonight interview, Stiles called the shoot “a special summer” when the young actors were “all really good friends.” Joseph Gordon-Levitt recalled hanging out and listening to music, while Gabrielle Union remembered the cast spending downtime together. Those are memories of the ensemble’s atmosphere, not evidence of a private relationship between Stiles and Ledger.
Entertainment Tonight also quoted a production-era comment from Ledger: “Julia and I work together. We’re fantastic together.” He praised Stiles’s sweetness and smile. The remark speaks to their partnership at work; it is not a declaration of romance.

How did Stiles describe Ledger years later?
In a 2014 Us Weekly interview, Stiles said the cast got along and described filming in Seattle as a fun, “pure” first-break experience. She called Ledger “such a force” and a “powerful, lovely human being.” She also said she remained in touch a little with Larisa Oleynik and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Taken together, Stiles’s recollections and the other cast members’ memories portray a friendly production and a considerate co-star. They do not answer every question about the actors’ private lives, but they offer no confirmation that Stiles and Ledger had a romance behind the scenes.
